Tool Grinder Clamp

Hi All,

Just picked up four of these at a car boot all new in their boxes, I got on to the makers who told me they are obsolete and from about 1990 but were top of the range at the time and quite expensive.

They certainly look a precision tool and I am going to make a clamp for one of them to go on my S7 for small grinding jobs, punches, centre pops etc which I have loads of and have no way of truing them up with new points.

OD is 29mm and I wonder how tight I should make the clamp to be secure yet avoid damage to the unit. I am worried about distorting the casing?

I can afford to mess one up as at a fiver each they were not too bad.

P.S. … In response to your actual question … Given the high speed and light duty, I would keep clamping to a ‘firm hand’ level … Perhaps a 43mm mounting collar with a stiff rubber insert ?

Hi Michael,

I have no idea of the consumption I am afraid, but the chap at the manufacturer said they are rated at 100k rpm which amazed me!

The unit has a knurled twist grip throttle at the rear so should be quite precise in use hopefully.

I have made up an alloy collar with a soft insert but am now missing a female to female BSP adapter to actually make it run!

Maybe at last I can remove the slight bell mouth on my 3 jaw!

… but it looks like air consumption might be around 6 CFM

Hi Michael, Thanks for that I had already d/l'd the document.

I have got it mounted and fired it up, it is REALLY fast but just a muted whine, so quiet compared to another old one that I had. The twist throttle is really smooth gets the rpm down to almost an idle.

A customer from EBay who is local called by to pick up his item saw it running and bought one of the others on the spot for £50 as he had been looking at a similar modern new one and it was £200! I have no idea what the latest ATA pencil one costs but a lot I bet!

I assume your lubricating it with a mist lubricator when running it.

Don't have one of those! Is that to lube the stone/part or the unit please? Does say not to use any oil in the spindle.

Hi Martin, Be very careful !!!! If it runs at 100k rpm then there is a real risk that it will exceed the max rated speed of most small stones at no load speed and controlling the speed to safe limits not easy. This could be highly dangerous.

Hi Noel, Thanks for the warning. Fortunately the throttle is very precise and I only need to run it at about 30% of max. An awesome tool for something so small!

The only problem i am having is getting it precisely on the centre line for some reason?

Mostly using it for putting fresh points on centre punches, scribers etc, only got about another 50 to do…….Grrr!
