        Gallows humour perhaps.

Modern ventilators are computerised fancy things but the Manley Ventilator is simple, reliable but requires a little more of the art of medicine to get it set and monitored.

This link took me down a very interesting route which lead to the inventions of John Blease. It was amazing to read that although not a doctor he had acted as an anesthetist on one occasion! Dr Manley subsequently joined Blease's company.

          Cheers

I was given a Manley Ventilator but the most common case we needed positive ventilation for (in general vet practice) was for the ocassional cat with a ruptured diaphragm and it wasn't easy to try and set it down to those values. So while I played with it a few times to stay familiar it never got used in anger and we generally stayed with the basic technique of manual 'bagging'.

Nevertheless the simple elegance of the thing is inspiring (pun intended)

It looks like car manufacturers are going to be mobilised to mass produce ventilators.

I think that Lord Nuffield (Morris) made the original Iron Lung I cannot remember if he was the inventor though.

Apparently car sales are already poor and I read that the Government has just reduced the electric vehicle Grant by £500 (in budget) so giving the car manufacturers different work might be useful (depending on adaptability).

They'll find 6 patients with identical lung capacity, stick an O2 line into the carb, upgrade the starter motor and plug them into a 2.6L straight 6 via the exhaust valves…
