Regular MEW contributor Geoff Walker recently came all the way from the UK to Australia to have a look at one of his M-Type cross slide extended bracket castings in operation. Well, he took some time off from diving on the Barrier Reef and visiting expat family members to fit a visit in. A great hour was spent comparing notes on M-Types etc. It was the first time I have actually met another M-Type owner in person. They are a rare machine in Australia.

Coincidentally, my old lathe came to Australia from not far from where Geoff lives. My old man bought it in Liverpool in the 1950s and shipped it home. Small world innit.

Geoff is on the left. I'm the one on the right wearing the North Queensland safety boots.

                Nice workshop.

                Nice pictures on the walls.

                Proper footwear.

Same safety boots as my w/shop attire.

Thanks. I spent several years getting the workshop set up, largely from garage sales and various scrounging. Insulation is top of my list to get done this winter. 35C summer temps in an unshaded tin shed are downright cruel!

Re the tropical safety boots, I have bought myself a pair of proper steel toe-cap boots, after the time I picked up the Drummond topslide and turned it over to check for swarf before reinstalling it. The unsecured Norman Patent toolpost fell off right onto my foot. Doh!

I have to laugh though every time I go to the local rubbish dump recycle shop full of steel, glass, etc etc lying about the place in piles. There is an official sign saying " Appropriate footwear must be worn. Minimum standard: thongs." Gotta love the tropics.

A late one? Ancient ancestor of my "almost new" 1937 M-type.

                        Hi Pete,

                        Just spotted this post.

Thank you so much for your hospitality last month.

Ann and I enjoyed the company of you and your wife very much.

I have to say that the M type was by no means the best machine in your workshop.

That distinction goes to your Harley Davidson, a real dream machine!!!!

Best regards to you and you good wife.

                          Gentlemen of the Brotherhood,

I'm just curious, not being an M owner or Drummond; am I right in thinking that the lead screw on those lathes was threaded 5 tpi?

                          Regards

                          Brian

M type – lead-screw 8 tpi (1/8 in. pitch stated in the manual)

Drummond round bed lathe – lead-screw 10 tpi Whitworth form ie 3/4 in BSW.

Thanks Geoff. It was great to meet you guys.

Well, if the Harley keeps going as long as the M-type has (79 years so far) it will be doing well!

Does somebody get the manual for a Myford M-Type from the period 1920-1922?

Hi Bob have a look on here.

                                      https://groups.io/g/drummondlathe

There is a wealth of information including a copy of the handbook. Most of the information is in the files section look under my name (David George) for some info but there is so much it takes a bit of looking through.

                                        Hi David,

                                        Merci for this ressource!

I just buy the numbered J1079 M-Type lathe and I want to assess if it's adapted for a beginner like me.

I certainely come back to you as you seem to be a Master of this group.

                                        Merci encore!
