Ted McDuffie's 'A Variable Lead Threading Attachment' – Was also designed to cut tapers but he never went into the cutting of the tapers in much detail. The lever assembly obviously has to be different for cutting tapers and the attachment has to be set on the lathe at 90 degrees.

Does anyone know how to achieve this and would you possibly have a photograph or sketch of the lever?

Thanks Michael but Ted Clarke's lathe has a taper turning attachment already fitted and it activates the variable thread tool. The Ted McDuffie threading tool also cuts tapers, the lever assembly for the threads is a different shape for the taper turning, it's the size and shape of this lever that I require.

Could you or anyone help with this? I'm sitting here with a bottle of gin and I don't know if I should drink it or hit it off the wall lol!

If you look at Jacques video there is a diagram after 30 seconds. You just need to make the arm ABC with a right angle at B so that when the whole thing is rotated 90 degrees clockwise the other arm CE will be pulling in the direction BA thus moving the tool holder inwards. The tool will be mounted at 90 degrees to its current position.

Jacques has posted before on this site so might try the alternative arangement for you. His version was described in ME April 2006 issue 4270.

Possibly the reason nobody has details of using it for tapers is that it is so much easier just to use the topslide.

I've made a taper turning attachment "all contained in a tooholder"; making a morse taper with it is almost as easy as making a cylinder (very quick set up). you'll know it as soon as some magazine would want to publish it. Don't be too optimistic as I've 7 (seven!) articles waiting in ME or MEW stock since 2006 with no publication, why should I write a new one.

Jacques, Please consider writing it up. It may fit more within the current plans of interesting things to publish.

We have seen from other people's posts that the magazines often lose or forget about articles or, just as with authors of fiction books, sometimes the publisher just doesn't want to publish that particular subject. Unfortuneately they don't always tell the author.

Meanwhile found this which looks hard to beat for simplicity.
