So I was knocking out a little job for work – needed a HSS cutter thinned from 2.5 to 1.5 mm

No problem, plonk on surface grinder and make sparks.

All good, job done so clean down the chuck and wipe over.

Run knuckle against corner of wheel.
Now have big hole in knuckle. No more machining tonight

I should point out that the machine was off, and I’d raised the stationary wheel away from the chuck, both vertically and horizontally. But the corner of a 46 grit wheel is just like sandpaper…

As the late JS would say clumsy b@strd.

Thanks for being brave enough to post this, it may help to prevent some of us from doing things that we later regret and yes, I think that most of us have done things that we wish we hadn't.

Just the nature of working with potentially dangerous equipment, when I was 19 working as a welder for a coach building company, my boots had come undone half a dozen times during the day, so I tied them in ultra tight triple knots, welding overhead a small pea size ball of molten metal fell inside my boot, taking a pair of shoes off has never taken so long.

When on apprentice I was in the habit of wiping the magnetic chuck top with my hand as I could feel any grinding dust but once I forgot to raise the wheel which was running and wiped my hand under the grinding wheel about 3/8 high I felt the wheel pull my hand through. And the wheel lifted slightly and only removed a small strip 1/2 inch wide of flesh and skin of three fingers which took a few weeks to scab over enough to work.

I wouldn't have thought that the wheel could do any damage, it must have been the dressed edge being much sharper than common bench grinder wheel.

How many times have I been told (and watched YouTube from folk like Adès workshop and Blondiehacks) that drone on about never ever ever try and remove swarf with fingers when the Lathe is running.

So I now know that alluminium swarf in long strands is much better than razor wire at shredding skin

                    Be warned !!

I once had a string of long swarf drag a huge ball of swarf straight into the chuck and wrap it up so tight I needed pliers and cutters to remove this steel nest from my chuck

So I always stay well clear and switch off

                      edit- then use pliers
