Sorry but a what vice thread and other essential tooling?

Evening all.

Well my new(to me) bridgeport is up and running. I'm now needing some basics.

Any suggestions for a decent vice? Also what else tooling wise should I get? I've got a nice ANILAM Wizard 411 dro(used) so that box is ticked.

My initial plans are for motorcycle related parts(yokes/rearsets/caliper adapters/brackets).

A Kurt vise is worth the money if you are doing a lot of milling, or if your other hobby isn't beating a cheap vise into submission!

A Golden Goose keyless drill chuck is a boon.

Make yourself a side to side work stop once you get the vise. One with a 1.5 mm dia thin pin that will pass between the vise jaws will allow multiple pieces of thin stock to be re-located as well as thick stock.

1/4", 3/8", 1/2" I.D. R8 collets will hold many common sizes of endmills. Initially you probably don't need a whole (expensive) set of collets.

A good LED work light is also a boon. Recently an inexpensive LED low-profile array was discussed on the forum which works very well.

I've tried googling but can't seem to find a UK price for a Kurt vice?

For my light i'm going to use the one attached to the machine as it'll save a few pounds over buying another.

There's a Rego-fix R8 Collet Chuck, with set of 3-20mm colllets near me for £100, would that be a sensible buy?(er32)

My Kurt D688 vice was a bit over £500, including VAT, a few years ago. I bought it from a company near St. Neots, but I assume there are other Kurt distributors in the UK.

This company seems to be the UK distributors, have you contacted them for a price?

You also ask about ER-32 collet chuck, I have one and I am very satisfied, the price seems OK.

Jason,

Regofix collets are great gear, so if they have not been abused before you got them, then you have grabbed a bargain. Have you thought about Gerardi vices? they are very good,Cutwel and MSC are 2 dealers that I know off here in UK . also look at Rohm vices, although many off their lines are more expensive than Kurt's they also have lines that are more suited [price wise] to our hobby.

My 18" shaper was free, as the owner couldn't sell it for cash.

OK so you want a vice Jason. Like you I machine parts for my classic motorcycles. There are vices and there are vices. How big do you want? Fixed? Swivelling? Tilting? Allof the above? Precision vice as used by toolmakers? First decide what you want. Then try any of the companies listed on the right of this page. Try also Gloster Tooling and then do the obvious thing in this day and age….e-bay. Simply enter milling vices and they appear by the dozen. HTH.

I'm thinking I want a 6" wide jaw, fixed would be fine as i'd like to get a rotary table when money allows.

I've got my eyes on one on ebay at the minute.

A person who is at the stage of needing to ask what tooling to get hardly needs a Kurt vice.

If you read the last 6 months of posts on this forum you will find this has been covered several times giving you a far wider range of advice than just this thread. You can also find out a lot by looking at the photos of set ups in the magazines using the electronic back issues which is one reason for reading the loco build articles even when you aren't interested in locos.

The idea is that I buy something that'll last the a long time without the need to buy another, thus saving money in the longer term. Price wise I guess i'd like a quality used item.  Also I can use others experience.  Everyone starts somewhere,  I'd like to start with the correct minimal tooling.
