      I have been using indexable turning / milling tools for some time now, and find them very good (if a bit liable to chip under some circumstances). My question is should these insarts be sharpened to improve finishes – they are generally supplied not particularly sharp, but I don't know if it is ok to grind them before first use. Can anyone advise?

          If you use a diamond hone you can sharpen inserts – at least uncoated ones. I also sharpen inserts that are a bit worn, and use them for roughing cuts on hard materials.
