Can anyone tell me what size the thread is on the outside of a schraeder valve

They are .302" x 32 TPI on the outside.

.302 sounds wrong ! 2 sizes ! There is the one used on smaller vehicles .202 od and a larger one for BIG vehicles. Cant find one at the moment. Noel   Ah yes ! Valve cap size is .306" X32 or.8mm for cars.

All the sizes are on the net. I get away with 5/16" x 32 tpi for the bigger ones when making motorcycle retaining nuts. The bespoke taps and dies are pricey for the odd nut.

Don't know what you class as a small vehicle Noel but this is a mountain bike tube, same fitting as all the cars I've ever had

I was thinking schrader valve not valve cap, so Yes jason your right ! That one is under size according to my schrader,michelin tool, .306". See edit. noel

There's also a Presta valve. 6mm od, Better for modern, very narrow rims.

Yep, that works fine to connect tyre inflators to run my stationary engines.

Wikipedia has info on Schrader valves. I have seen them used in compressed air regulators at 3000psi, and the cores look just like the short version and are the same size.

For reference, including the term 'DIN 7756' in searches relating to tyre valve threads produces some good results.
