I was rather surprised that a top public school would have a facility like this.

Wonder if it's classed as "Metalwork" and "Woodwork" or lumped into "Art and Design."? Just shows the lengths (And costs) you have to go to to include a "Practical" education, pity the working class politicians were allowed ruin the education system and kill the pipe rack and poker generating facilities.

Wonder haw many if those shown will go on to operate machinery rather than just driving a screen? Surprised that they're not all wearing Hazmat suits.

Does not surprise me at all. These schools tend to have first class facilities in all subjects and use them. Not every public school pupil will go on to be a legalised bank robber in the City. How many will go on to blue collar jobs, very very few, but what it does do is give all of them a start in understanding how things are made, which a fair percentage will need to know for future careers. Engineering is not dead in this country it just works differently to how some people remember or think it should.

My niece went to a girls public school which had a fully equipped workshop including a Boxford lathe. She left at the age of 18 to become an "engineer" have made full use of the facilities. She had started making a Stuart 10 steam engine.

Looking back at my days at work, most of the women engineers I worked with probably had private educations.

In fact I'm less surprised that public schools have workshops than state schools. generally they are under less money cutting measures and see the benifit of such things.

I must say that I am surprised but also greatly encouraged by this, most schools seem to be getting rid of machinery.

Does it really matter? Designing and building their own stuff is what matters. Doing it with modern materials and techniques is also important.
