For all those who do not accept BEVS as the way forward and those that particularly watch mcmaster and ‘muppet who buys cars’ (amongst others), here is a video they should really, really watch, take note of and realise the disinformation about EV adoption provided by some u-toob channels (income for number of views), the papers (for advertising revenue) and the oil companies (falling profits from fuel sales).

Dave is obviously very pro-EV (particularly Tesla) and mcmaster an anti-EV protagonist who has completely ‘burst his bubble’ in this video!

I would advise watching some of mcmaster’s earlier videos about EVs and comparing those to the reality demonstrated in this video.

I don’t watch/follow either of these people NDIY but now that I’ve watched this video, then of course I’m going to immediately sell my (brand new) petrol car and buy a Chinese EV.

        Well perhaps not  🙂

You like your EV and the cars (and charging infrastructure) are improving – I get it.

But why don’t we just accept that we are still in the middle of a technology shift. EVs clearly work for some people but not for everyone. I like my car. It’s quick, drives very well and doesn’t look like a brick on wheels. I can still afford to run it but will admit I do begrudge the amount of tax I have to pay, especailly given the state of our roads.

I may well move to an electric vehicle in a few years time when my age (or eyesight) demand it – but I’m not willing to exchange my Alfa for a mobility scooter just yet.

        Regards,

Eventually, EVs are the way to go. However the technology is still nowhere near perfect. Higher capacity batteries with lower weight are required, plus faster charging. EVs are not there yet. The discussion on costs is a minefield, it all depends on the taxation structure that the government decides on.

I am quite content to let others lead the way and bear the costs, I shall stick to my diesel powered car until EVs have improved.

          Andrew.

Tesla  Model S Plaid does 0 to 60 in less that 2 seconds, even the everyday EV3 I’m considering achieves 7.2 seconds, which is a lot faster than my current Fabia at 10.6 seconds. Comparing EVs to mobility scooters is plainly silly.

As a mildly interesting side-note, did you know the Tesla Plaid model is named after a scene in Mel Brook’s Star Wars spoof movie “Spaceballs”? Plaid is the next speed up from “Ludicrous Speed”, which is faster than “Ridiculous Speed”, which is faster than “Light Speed”.

Regularly doing 0-60 in under 3 seconds will increase costs because of the tyre, and probably brake wear.

And given present traffic conditions, (Potholes, great lengths of motorway , M6, M42, M5; limited to 50 mph, such feats are unrealistic, and make little difference to overall journey times.

                And as for the M25!

Much of the A47 and A149 between Peterborough and Hunstanton is subject to a 50 mph speed limit).

The journey is now at least 15 min longer than thirty years ago, because of the volume of traffic and the limits. You would have to work hard to save much time over that journey with a high performance car

The good side to all this? My little 8 year old 1 litre petrol will turn in 70 mpg on a warm day, so that if needed, a brim full (small) tank will JUST give a range of 500 miles. I can’t use the 14 seconds to accelerate from 0 – 60; I literally just have to go with the flow and the HGVs!

Well, I wasn’t trying to compare dicks but my car can get to 60mph in 5.4 secs and go on to 149mph. Of course it never gets driven that hard with this old F**t at the wheel.  It’s one thing to have a powerful car and another to be able to keep it on the road. Too much power applied at the wrong time will lose grip and in a heavy EV the driver is going to find it even harder to correct it. An awful lot of supercars (3.5 secs was really “fast” not long ago) get written off by rich but inexperienced drivers.

However, my reference to mobility scooters was more about the likelihood of my needing another ‘car’ by the time I’m finished with my current one. I’ve already spent my three score and ten and that was a good while ago. I can read my fate on the Office for National Statistics site as well as anyone else. My new car will see me out.

In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy driving it for as long as l can.   🙂

As others have said, horses for courses of course. No, BEVs aren’t *perfect*, but neither are ICE cars. They are noisy and smelly and expensive to run. The more I drive electric the less I want a gas guzzler.

I “forced” my dear old mother to drive my Leaf the other day. I sometimes borrow theirs (it has a trailer hitch) and I’d like them to be mobile in case of *something unexpected*. She quickly concluded that it handles like a regular car and suggested we swap permanently 🙂

More importantly for model engineers than all this speed crap can you take out the front and back seats so you can transport a pillar drill, or Boxford lathe, or 24in cricket pitch roller without stripping them down like I did in my 850cc Perodua Nippa?

Don’t need to.  Plenty of space if loading is OK.  Alternatively, the bits could be loaded onto my trailer.  So no real problem for me.  Took home a 300l S/S solar hot water cylinder, associated pipework and expansion vessels, along with the frame and 20 thermal solar vacuum tubes that went with it.  All fitted relatively easily (special care taken with the glassware).
