i am very sorry to report the death of Peter Rich last weekend. he will be known to GWR fans both miniature and fullsize as a superb draughtsman and authority on GWR locos old and 'new' and an award winning builder of 5"g models of the older GWR locos in 5"g. a superb craftsman who sadly has been in poor health the last few years. a regular contributor to ME and EIM with his designs.

peter worked on steam in fullsize then changed career but found fulfillment in his miniature re-creations.

Very sad to hear of Peter Rich's death.Though I didn't know Peter,I had always enjoyed reading his articles in Model Engineer:-the Dean locos build series and his occasional loco profiles,particularly the one entitled "Churchwards Rough Riders" I have a number of Peter's excellent drawings which cover most GW 2 cylinder locos in 5" gauge.I've only ever seen photos of the locos he built;the quality of his work was immediately evident.I believe Peter had been working on a number of 5"gauge GWR 'Saint' class loco models,which would have been a sight to behold.He also had a big involvement with the GWR Society 'Saint' project at Didcot,indeed I believe the idea was Peter Rich's originally.

A sad passing. I always admired his excellent drawings and enjoyed his writing. As a fellow SouthWalian the image that sticks in my head are his descriptions of setting down tools to go piping on the Newport foreshore.

Yes, it was something that marked the man out, when he began or ended his diatribe in the magazine with a description of some obtuse reel that he intended to blast away at on the pipes.

His drawings were excellent; a real love of things GWR shone through. I never met him, but I am still much saddened by his passing.

Like many others, I too was saddened to hear of Peter's passing. He is one of those contributors whose writing I would like to see gathered in a book, pan pipes and all.

As a new member to this forum I would like to add my tribute to Peter. I went to Secondary school with him we also went to the same college during our appreticeships. We also joined the same Model Engineering club when we were only about Thirteen. Over the years he served as a Police Officer but still carried on with his modeling winning over the years many awards for the very detailed locos some of which I drove. I has been a privillage to have had him as a lifelong friend.

A couple of years ago I posted a few questions on locomotive details, basically "How'd you do it?", to one of the model engineering boards I haunt and I was answered off-board by "Taff", a name which aside from that particular ME board I had not run across despite years (actually decades) of reading ME and not so many EIM. (Perhaps I should re-read some of these volumes and pay closer attention to the bylines.) Anyway a brief, friendly, and very helpful personal correspondence followed which eventually included several photos of his beautifully done GWR locomotive models. I too am sorry to hear of his passing.
