To say I HAAAAATE painting is an understatement!! Its just one effin disaster after another. When I build Speedy im going to have everything chrome plated! Then undersealed, then waxoyld and finally cover everything with anti-vandal paint!!!!! Hate it!!!

Break engine down into convenient units , remove fittings etc , take to nearest garage and have parts steam cleaned and then professionally sprayed with automotive paint .

Modern day car paint is super finish and heat and damage resistant .

I took my wife's car to the garage for two tyres and wheel alignment yesterday.

There was a 'Hornby Magazine' placed ina consopicuous place, away from all the usual magazines, so I set down for a good read.

I think it was a test of sorts as the chap behind the counter asked "reliving some childhood dreams?" – it turned out he has a monster layout in his loft and some 120 locos! I ended up bringing said magazine home.

The point is, however, that virtually every loco in the magazine was weathered to some degree – certainly virtually every one on a layout. Many are even sold that way. Although a few looked a bit odd (white bloom on a blue-black engine – may be a poor colour balance on the picture) in general the effect was very convincing.

I was brought up on 'weathered' plastic kits. I suppose that if you have spent years and years on your masterpiece yopu want it to "glow like Bongo", but I feel like Fizzy about painting, and wonder if a good weathered finish isn't just as valid as "Royal Train Ready"?

Hi fizzy – Why not go for the compleat weathered look – Spray with POWER WASHER with GRIT BLASTING ATTACHMENT (Cleans off any protective materials) – Leave to AIR DRY outside for about 2/3 weeks – The resulting finish will be realy WEATHERED

Hi Springbok – Wet Grit/Sand blasting – Used for abrasive cleaning/cutting of stone/brick/metal etc.

More details http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/sand-blasting-attachment-3 – other retailers do similar products.

If used make sure item to be cleaned is firmly fixed or it might start to fly

With my professional plastic modelling head on, I often weather the trucks that I build. I'm known for it as a lorry driver you don't often see a sparkly clean wagon.

it seems I'm struggling a bit with the forum from my tablet, I was unable to sort it until I got home to my desktop PC.

As far as the models go, many of those in the gallery were built for customers but the weathered ones are mine.
