      Hello

Got a replacement motor for my clarke saw. However this one the wires are not colour coded and just wondering (As its Saturday) if you can tell me if I get Live and Neutral the wrong way round will it blow up of maybe just spin the wrong way.

The motor is 240v with a large capacitor on the side

Just swapping over live and neutral in the motor should make no difference BUT there are probably more than two terminals (Plus earth.) in the connection box on the motor. IT DOES MATTER WHICH TWO TERMINALS THAT THEY ARE CONNECTED TO. Post a picture of the connection box and any information that may be inside the lid of the connection box if you are not sure which two terminals to connect to.

          Les.

In a word NO, just make sure you identify the earth wire and connect accordingly.

It looks like that only 2 connections are used on the terminal strip so live and neutral will connect to them. It looks like there is no way to reverse it. If I was connecting it up I would first remove the two screws that hold the terminal strip to the motor to see if there are any wires connected to the underside of the terminal strip.

                Les.

                  There are none underneath

If you reverse the motor on a saw, will it cut things back together again?

                      Les.

No way to reverse it, confused?

Which wire would you connect live to and which to connect neutral to?

So to clarify I am ok to connect either way (Live and Neutral) and check which direction the motor works?

it may be useful to look at the wiring to/from the capacitor as both ends of the start winding might be brought out there tho with a motor designed for a saw there is no need to allow choice in motor direction

It's not easy to reverse some of these motors. As you say you need to reverse either the start or run winding, just one NOT both. I have had a few similar motors in pieces and one thing to note is the centrifugal switch is at the drive end. The capacitor is the clue as it is in series with the start winding so one end of the start winding is available but the other end takes a bit of finding if at all possible. I hope your motor is rotating in the correct direction and doesn't need any alterations. John

No matter which way you connect the Live and Neutral it runs in the same direction
