Looks to me as if it's some kind of centrifugal water or other liquid circulating pump.

What it's originally intended for I can unfortunately be of no help to you with.

Centrifugal Pump … Looks too nicely made to be commercial, so Stuart Turner or similar origin seems likely.

It's a Stuart centrifugal pump as shown in my 1940 – 1941 Stuart model catalogue. Page 36. I've always been under the impression that WW2 was gripping Europe. Did Stuart help with the war effort? Just a thought.

However… I've taken a pickie but don't know how to insert it with the text? I'm sure someone will tell me or point me to the right thread! Still – I've just come back from an evening out with my 'last of the summer wine' pals and the alcohol doesn't help!

Hi, same type of pump as shown by Johnboy25, but a different design. In Harry's picture, it is possible to strip down the pump leaving all the pipework intact and the bearings can be worked on, on the bench, and the outlet is opposite hand. With the Stuart design you would have to at least disturb the inlet pipework to get to the impeller to clean out debris or remove the bearings for maintenance. They will both do much the same job though.

I've worked on much larger ones of both types and the one in Harry's picture are much more easy to work on. I do realise these are only small, but if you don't have to disturb the pipework, so much the better.

Looks like Stuarts may have changed the design at some time, this is the one from my 80s catalogue which has a different foot and flange mounting for the outlet, they do call it teh No 2 pump so could Harrys be a No 1?

Stuart did indeed help with the war effort. They made a little steam powered generating set that was used to power clandestine radios. I would also expect that like most manufacturing plants, they would have been going flat out at making whatever was needed that fitted their capabilities.

Apart from that, I believe that at one time they were making quite a lot of pumps in the full size world. I think they divested the model side at some point, or maybe vice versa.

I've always assumed that Stuarts models was the same co. as the Stuart who made full size pumps, maybe not. I have a Stuart piston water pump, used on my well. the parts list shows an extra was a sleeve and piston to convert to a boiler pump, about 1" dia.

I think they were Gordon – I seem to remember seeing both pumps and casting kits in their shop window when they were still based in Henley-on-Thames.

IIRC, Model Engineer ran a short article or 2 on the subject of a small vertical steam boiler powered generating set for the use of agents transmitting clandestine radio messages back to the UK during the war.
