Marshall Portable Engine Wheel Hubs

I have seen a couple of different 1½" scale models of this engine that have had some nice additional details on them.

I plan on building one myself and have a set of castings etc stashed away, but what I am interested in is the wheel hubs on these models, the standard castings are plain but i have seen ones with raised lettering around the hubs which reads :

"Marshall Sons & Co – Gainsborough & London"

Does anyone know where these castings might have come from ?

I was planning on getting some 3D printed rings done and setting them into the hubs, but if castings are available that would be even better.

It would be possible to cast them though at that scale foundry lettering may not be available. What is the od of the rim, or height of lettering you would need ? Noel.

Hi Phil,

A model of a Marshall portable is the next big project on my list of engines to build. AJ Reeves have castings for sale but I would like to make or fabricate my own. Can't tell from the photo on their web site if the wheel hubs have lettering

Our steam club (full size engines) has a 4 NHP Marshll and I would like to make a miniature of it and possibly call it "Mini-me". One thing that I have noticed that is different in your model photo is the wheel spokes which on our engine looks like this.

The Allchin TE wheel-hubs have cast-in lettering. For the Hughes model, Reeves did supply stamped brass discs to attach to the machined castings. Don't know if they do the same for the Marshall.

I have not come across and hubs with lettering already on them from any of the usual suppliers, when I made the ones for my 3" Ruston tractor I used individual foundry letters soldered onto a brass ring and then bonded into the iron hub casting, but those letters were 1/4" high, I think the ones on the Marshall will be approx 1/8" high.

The wheel spokes on Marshall portable engines were built in two styles, I am not sure if one was earlier than the other or if they used both at the same time.

I am still thinking that 3D printed rings with the lettering on might be the answer if they can be printed with enough detail. I can easily make an STL file in Solidworks 3D.

The rear wheel hubs on my 6" Ruston that I bought from Live Steam Models came with lettering. Not sure if they are also on the smaller models.

The Marshall engine in my previous post with the bent flat bar spokes was built in 1890.

You can get small brass letters from the likes of Scale Link or depending how hot yours is likely to get then the plastic Slaters letters can be stuck on. You could even take a mould off one done with the plastic letters and cast your own ring in a low melting point alloy.

Just been having a play around with Solidworks, this is what I had in mind.

The rear ones are slightly larger than the front ones. Both have 2mm high characters.
