These Walkover welding kits used to be sold by Proops along

with the replacement bottles , have seen the bottles sold in

roofing repair establishments as these portable units are used

for leadwork.The oxygen regulators are not very reliable and the

oxygen pipe has blown off mine sometimes .Most of the oxygen

will leak away if you leave the regulator connected to the bottle

when not in use ,apart from that they are a very handy unit for doing

fine silver soldering. Replacement bottles used to be about £18 but that

was some years ago ,the gas bottle lasts for ever.

Might be worth asking Cupalloys, I noticed a small portable outfit on their stand at a recent exhibition.

Bottles for this equipment are no longer available. They leaked. I am told that this equipment crops up fairly regularly at car boot sales and on internet sites at very reasonable prices. £5 – £10. But bottles cannot be found.

We have been told this many times at exhibitions and what bargains they are!

Our product is similar to that bought except with two major differences.Firstly the bottles do not leak and secondly are readily available.

Sorry – our bottles do not fit the regulators on Brians kit – different thread.

It is a good piece of kit for what it is intended – ie precision heating for soft and silver soldering of small components.

Although it produces a very hot, concentrated flame – DO NOT USE IT FOR WELDING. It does not burn sufficient gas quickly enough for welding.

I have a similar unit bought in Germany – they can be bought in any hardware shop there, and I have always found mine to be useful – very fine, hot needle-like flame. Biggest problem seems to be as already mentioned – I always take off the oxy bottle when not in use, because it seems to leak from around the regulator, so you end up with empty oxy bottles quickly – that leads to the second problem – I have three full, useless oxygen bottles, because the thread on the connectors are all different – they visually look almost identical, but don't fit (and they are expensive). Maybe I'll get round to making an adaptor one day….

Hi Brian

Before you scrap it why not make your own adaptors to fit new bottles that what I have done. I bought a set of portable and fittings which work ok but the problem is the bottles don't last very long and cost a lot as the bottles are disposable, I bought a 25L Hobby oxygen bottle, and regulator from eBay with flash back and made adaptor for the pipe, I also use a camping gaz butane bottle with an adaptor works brilliant and lasts a lot longer I have had mine for over a year now and still 900psi left. I don't think it would be any use for boiler work but it is ok for even gas welding steel, I know there will be people that don't advise it but as long as it fits tight and no leaks I don't see the problem.

What is the full bottle pressure? I would be wary of making an adaptor for this if I could not arrange a hydrostatic pressure test on a home made adaptor before using it with gas. I have seen brass fittings blow apart on a CO2 extinguisher system when the pressure was put on them for a functional test of the system. Turns out the supplier had some dodgy brass with internal weaknesses and had not tested the fittings before selling them. Four of five supplied were scrapped this way.

not sure I’d like a leaking O2 bottle in any workshop – I still remember the university physics lab demo when we started work with liquid O2 etc as to just how quickly a fire could start from any slightly smouldering material (and in those days smoking was acceptable almost everywhere)

I get all my gas for the mig and welding from "Hobby Gas"…… better than the big boy's…BOC etc….

available at most hire shops…..over here a garage size oxy -accet. bottles set cost €1400 per year….

I kind of like all the suggestions, but I think I will stick with putting it in a bin to play safe.

I bought a propane torch set this year from cup and like using that.

Hi Martin

The bottle pressure is 1000psi full but as the fittings and adaptors I've made are after the regulator there is no problem, as for the threads I would pack up modelling if I could not thread brass as good as any bought fittings, have you seen the threads on disposable gas bottles, I could file them better.

Somewhere, at the back of my garage is an oxygen generator. It used hydrogen peroxide and water to form oxygen contained in two small tanks . The whole thing is about the size of a mini inverter welder. If I remember rightly, peroxide came in 1 ltr bottles, bought 4 at a time. It came with its own gas torch with a screwed fitting for a Maps gas bottle held at the back. It worked OK for some time but I now use the semi professional bottles which are obtained on a single deposit payment and only need to pay for the cost of refill. Even better, I have now found a local agent for supplies which saves the cost of postage.

I have the German set which I think use the same threads, left hand for the oxy, right hand for the fuel gas. Oxy is a bit expensive at around 25 to 30 quid but the fuel gas (Mapp gas) is not very expensive. I get my gas from a variety of local suppliers, BOC depot in Bradford is only 1/4 mile from me away as is Energas, I have welded thin steel with this set and silver soldered brass, copper and steel. Some Machine Mart shops sell the bottles.There are also 3 engineers suppliers near to me also selling the cylinders.

Its worth checking any engineers suppliers near to you.
