The article of Emma Victoria ME 4445 p844 describes the axle boxes fitted with Oilite bushes.

The concept of an Oilite bush is that it is impregnated with oil and does away with the need to manually lubricate it. So why drill an oil way through the bush ?.

Also the bush needs to be a press fit as stated but the bush is easily distorted so whether you drill an oil way or not it is worth while running a reamer through the bush.

You should never use a reamer on oilite or any sintered bronze material, it tends to close up the pores making it unable to take in or release oil.

The bushes will dry out over time so the oil hole is there to top them up as it were. Also adding oil to the centre of the bush will tend to wash out any dirt, ash etc rather than it being carried into the bearing surface if you used the oilcan from teh outside

OIlite bushes are intended to press fit in their targeted location, it is the receiving hole that should be reamed to size, that way the sintered bush will end up with the designed hole, without the damaging use of a reamer as Jason points out.

The bush should be inserted into the reamed hole with a shouldered mandrel, the small dia should be the size of the shaft that will be used (it should be well polished). Ian S C

Would it be worth machining a groove on the inside of the bush to act as an oilway ?

Eric, NO, NO, oilite bushes do not need oil groves, you stand a chance of cracking the bearing, they are made to the finished size, and ready to go. The oil is already inside the body of the bearing, it's sort of like a metalic sponge. Ian S C

Emma Victoria caught my eye, she looks cute , hope that does not offend any steam loco enthusiasts.

Never been that interested in making a model loco but this one sparked an interest, maybe a future project.

Just one thing (at the moment) puzzles me, are the drawings that appear in the article the only ones, several items are just described, is this sufficient for the experienced loco builder? or am I missing something.

                      Hi Bill

All drawings will be published. We will catch up very shortly.

Emma Victoria is a good beginners engine.

                      regards David

                        Thanks David, good news.

I've got a staionary engine and boiler on the go at the moment so guess a simple loco is the next challenge.

                        Regards

                        Bill
