Emco Compact 5 Handwheel conversion

In a previous thread concerning the merits of owning a Compact 5. I mentioned I was in the process of adding a few up-grades to this particular lathe.

I offer here a hand wheel conversion to save all the tedium of winding the leadscrew handle to traverse the carriage from one end of the bed to the other.

This attachment does not require any machining of the existing lathe and bolts on in place of the existing leadscrew nut. I hope to start work on the parts in due course so will keep those interested updated.

Watching with interest Graham. I've been thinking of adding a custom apron to mine to do just this but I suspect your version will be better than anything I come up with.

My first intention was to make a completely new carriage. However the more I thought about it the more I realised this current design was a much simpler solution. Plus it will be quicker to build.

Hallo Graham,

If I read your drawings well you mount the designed attachment instead of the leadscrew nut and all left to the longitudinal slide.

Would this not mean that the minimum distance between cross slide and headstock is increased by at least some 50mms? You think this is acceptable for most of the machining operations?
