      Hi Chaps

I bought a digital height gauge from Allendale at the last Harrowgate show, It has been a joy to use and improved my accuracy no end. However this am when I went out to play (with an ambitious set of ideas in my head for a good 4 hour session) it just gives a bizzarre ever scrolling read out. I shall of course contact Allendale tomorrow but wondered if there is anything I can do to make it play nice ( I have changed the battery ) for the rest of the day.

I have had this with mine. A new battery put it right. I would try another in case the one you fitted was a dud.

You could bring it into the warm house and see if that improves things after a few hours. Was it a new battery you fitted or one you have had in the cold workshop for some time?

I had a similar problem . Turned out to be radiation from a low energy lamp ( ie mini fluorescent ) that I was using in my work light.

                Hi chaps

Thanks for the rapid replies, I have tried 2 new batterys but both were stored in a cold work shop, So I have brought the poor thing into the warm for a little TLC.

I will see if that helps

I have found that thse types of gauges do not like moisture. The DRO's on my mill sometimes have similar symptoms when it has been raining for a long period. They operated correctly after they have dried out.

                    Hi Dunc

I too suspect the effect of cold on the batteries – I don't operate too well when I'm cold!

Another point to watch is the source of your batteries – going for the "bargain" ebay offers is usually not the best way forward.

I've had similar problems which,on very close examination, turned out to be caused by almost invisible (to my old eyes) corrosion .A little scrapeand a smear of oil on the battery worked fine on my 150mm vernier. Colin

well that seems to be sorted.. Brought it into the house for a warm and it now seems like a happy bunny. Righty then Tinas main bearings it is then!

                        Thanks Lads
