In the recent thread about a shaper vs. a mill some mention was made about adding electronics to shapers to make the process more automated. Anyone want to try this

Or just straight cuts if wavey is a bit much😉

About 50 years ago…. I used to work for a packaging machine manufacturer. We did a pill machine, where two rolls of plastic-coated aluminium foil were trapped between two stainless steel heated rollers with pockets in them to hold the pills. The rollers looked as if they were knurled, but the grooves were planed in a fixture in a conventional big tape-controlled NC vertical spindle milling machine. The cutter held in the locked spindle was a thread-form carbide, IIRC, and they had to change the insert every so many cuts. The rollers had to be accurately machined because they were effectively two gear wheels with very fine teeth, so they had to mesh properly.

There was no need for the cutter to steer around, as in Jason’s videos, but as I say, it was 50 years ago. I suddenly feel very old… but there’s not a lot new under the sun!

Nicholas Hacko over in Oz uses this technique to make Guilloche dials for watches
