Boxhill – cover for trailing axle

Does anybody know what the cover is supposed to do? As drawn it fouls the trailing axle, the step in it is narrower than the boiler – confused. At the moment I just feel like leaving it out but the axle does run under the boiler (I think) so something is needed but what?

Hi Phil,

The wording of your question suggests that you have not seen the ME building articles, which I believe were in 1963. As I recall, the rear hornblocks were modified by an angled top edge milled out for ashpan clearance, The sheet metal cover was to keep ash away from the trailing axle/axlebox/hornblock.

Try to get hold of relevant MEs and read up. Join a club that has them in their Library or buy them. Could always flog em on after engine built. A number of preserved railways have this type so you could visit Bluebell Rly., Kent & East Sussex Rly. or maybe others like the Isle of Wight Rly and compare full size with your model.

Thanks John. No I haven't seen the articles having been put off by the Pansy articles which were close to useless, LBSC often saying for difficult bits – 'I have covered this before so won't bother again'. I understand the need for a cover (Pansy doesn't have one though) and have just made it without the step and will see what fouls later. The hornblocks are cut away at the top as you say and the cover follows this curve but why the step? Pictures on line either show no cover or a half cover and as I say, as drawn, it fouls the trailing axle big time. Travel to see the real thing would be nice, maybe one day.

I was very happy with the crank axle though, all glued and pinned now

hi phil,

looking at a fullsize Terrier wont help you as in fullsize and on Don Young's 7.25"g Terrier 'Newport' the boiler finishes just ahead of the horncheek sides on the front of the rear horncheeks.

across the top of the horncheeks in fullsize is a frame stretcher to which the reverser and drawbar are also fixed.

martin evans extended the length of the firebox and also gave it a non-prototypical sloping bottom for a sloping grate.

ignore the trailing axlebox cover at the moment. it wont fit. you want to fit a cover later on that just covers the gap between the inner sides of the horncheeks, and just covering the axleboxes, not the whole horncheek casting. this is something to be done when you have the boiler made and doing a trial fit and also have the oil pipes to the axleboxes sorted out. the cover needs to be much smaller than drawn as otherwise the ashpan wont fit or be removable.
