Yes you are correct, that is also one of the reasons I feel making a new hub from a block of cast iron.

Using this, though it may be too small dia would be a lot less work, it's the same idea as a Bull gear repair. Rapid metals do 125mm ena1 3" long for £19+vat cast iron is much dearer

If that were mine and if I could find all or most of the broken bits I would strip it down and clean it all then glue all the bits back on with something like Araldite 2013 using large jubilee clips to hold all the bits in place. After that I would turn the OD true and shrink a thin steel sleeve onto the OD.

Yes I think glue and a shrunk-on sleeve could work. You could even extend those two existing screw-on plates around the drive pin holes to take the load. You could then use the lathe to turn up a complete new piece at your leisure.

If you can't do that, a possible source of spare parts might be South Bend stuff from America, as the Boxford was a clone of the South Bend. You would have to check out if they made the larger equivalent model to your VSL. Possibly the South Bend 10" lathe. The Practical Machinist forum has an active South Bend forum that may be of help,or lathes.co.uk etc.

Also, the Australian clone of the South Bend, the Hercus, made the 260 model that looks very similar to yours but no variable speed drive. Some spares available here HERCUS LINK  Maybe the four-speed step pulley could be substiuted for yours as the 260 had a larger spindle than the standard 9" lathe? You'd have to do some research there.
