Anyone know how to fix this?

Light load, low speed and crack – see below! Can I buy just the centre part of a motor? Its a derivitive of the Sieg X2, mine came from America but it looks identical(PCB picture also for identification).

Good oppertunity to upgrade to brushless , sooner or later the controller will die anyways so new controller and brushless motor is the way i would go finances permitting .

File up a couple of new segments from copper or brass, fix them using epoxy putty, skim between centres and reconnect the wires (their tails seem to be there).

 

Or do what I did – replace the motor with a layshaft and a pulley (turned on the mill) and run the lathe using an old motor. Once running make a few stepped pulleys (I made 2 and 3 step ones for six speeds which became twelve with back gear).

Unlikely, the commutator has partially disintegrated. It may have overheated because of sparking.- heavy wear showing extended use is evident so the brushes would have been worn unless replaced recently. It probably should have been skimmed but that's with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight..

I think I'll check mine though.

You used to be able to buy new armatures, I bought one for a Black & Dekker drill about 25 years ago, maybe more, but I don't think things work that way now, maybe with some of the more expensive, industrial type machinery. I'd go with JS, heave it and get a new motor. Don't bin it, there's a shaft, a pair of bearings, then bin it.

On a slightly more positive note, I took the head off today to discover all the plastic gears have been replaced with metal ones – but there wasnt a microgram of lubricant to be seen! I will order a new motor soon as the world gets over christmas and might even put a blob of grease in there too!

Hi fizzy

I'd check the speed control board is OK

use an ordinary tungsten filament bulb as a dummy load instead of the motor – "green" led or compact fluorescent bulbs are no good for this

I'm sure I've seen 240V 100W GLS bulbs on sale 2 or 3 weeks ago in one of the pound shops
