      Hi,

I seek your advice please. I own a reasonable 6 inch bench grinder, I now want to grind/profile some tungsten tools and I know that the standard aluminium oxide wheel wont work. I think I read somewhere that I need a green wheel?

      Thank you,

      Ian

Green Grit wheels are Silicon Carbide … a hard abrasive with sharp corners

          See Wikipedia: **LINK**

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_carbide#Abrasive_and_cutting_tools

But I’m not entirely convinced that Silicon Carbide itself [although often green-ish] is itself as green as some of the wheels.

          dont know

It seems that it comes in two colours:

            Black and green silicon carbide

The Wikipedia article mentions multiple colours, sometimes due to impurities. My recollection from long ago was that the wheels I used in industry were always green. This was for brazed carbide cutting tools, before inserts were common or perhaps available.

I have two large(ish) ‘green grit’ wheels. One, purchased at HIS in Inverness, is very green in colour, while the other (more recently) from ArcEuroTrade is definitely much darker in colour – certainly not green, as I see it.

The first was bought for a bench grinder (20mm bore) and the second for my surface grinder (any standard size to 1 1/4&rdquo.

Hi Ian what shape are you grinding as green grit wheels are fairly soft to keep the wheel cutting. I rough out with a green grit 150 grit wheel and finnish with a diamond wheel. Are they turning tools or milling cutters with a form on. When grinding the rough form I may have to re-dress the wheel a few times if I am making a for instance a radius tool and it is a bit dusty.

                  Hi,

Thanks for the help so far.

DG1, My intention is to grind a relief angle on the cutting edge of a large carbide insert, for some reason it comes without any clearance angle? This may work well in a large industrial lathe but not so well in my lathe hence the desire to alter it slightly.

I was thinking that maybe a diamond wheel would be the best route but wanted to see what the general opinion was first as they tend to be pretty expensive.

                  Thanks to all for suggestions,

                  Ian

                      Hi David,

Is that a specific grinding machine with the diamond wheel intended to be fitted? I am not sure that a similar wheel would fit onto my simple bench grinder but I will check out the dimensions, many thanks for your help.
