The Kaimac lathe that my son has have had in custody since I put a 30mm hole spindle in,is back.

I only had to give him my new 250 lathe.

We have among us put HuanYang inverters on 4 lathes. The only problem is only how much low end torque to allow. The manual warns against asking to much.

It was therefore interesting to put a total packet solution on.

Modern industrial sewing machines use a brushles DC motor and a complete package for 600 Watt is under 100 £.In China they are traded among chineese for 32$.Input is 220V AC and output is a funny threephase of max48 V.

It has been tried on the Kaimac thing and is alarmingly good and cheap.

          Hi Neils

How about putting a back gear or intermediate spindle in to slow spindle speed without lowering the motor speed too much.

I will rather build in a bigger motor for 50 € more.

They can be had to 1500Watts and 3000 rpm

My much modified 180 with a homemade spindle needed a new and shorter chuck/faceplate/ER40 tool etc and I machined a M59.21/1mm thread close to headstock.

The sewing machine controller was set to 125 max spindle rpm and 25 to 125 rpm is controlle with left thumb.

it stops within 0.25mm axial movement.

I put a six pole three phase motor of Ihp and a VFD on the Tom Senior mill and set the limits from 25 to 75 Hz. Lower frequencies are possible, but I didn't think the rapid drop off of torque was worth it. The four speed ratios using the belt drive are still essential and worth the slight bother to change when required.

                      Made a M59.5/1 big nut for a 210 spindle with 50mm hole on a 180 lathe today.

It takes time but is pleasant.

I have bougth a new 210/38 hole lathe for less money than I gave for the first I had.

It cannot be of worse building quality so this is a clear win-win situation.
