I shall shortly be commencing construction of a 7¼” gauge Hunslet ELIDIR quarry locomotive.  This will be to the ¼ scale drawings of Alan Ruston produced by Reeves in 1979. There are a number of online comments about possible problems with the valve gear.  However, it is often not made absolutely clear whether these comments apply to the drawings by Don Young, John Milner or Alan Ruston or to either or both the 5” or 7¼” gauge versions.

Can anybody confirm for certain if the Ruston drawings for the ¼ scale 7¼” gauge version will produce a satisfactory working steam model please? I am not so concerned with whether a more theoretically absolutely perfect gear could be produced but simply if working to the drawings will produce a gear that does the job adequately.

        They will. Very much so.

Run it through one of the many computer simulations, then you’ll be sure.

Stephen & Duncan. I very much appreciate your replies and sorry that I could not reply earlier.  I was aware of Stephen’s superb (an under statement) JENNIFER ANN and had seen the video of the 1st steaming but could not find any online ref as to whether your valve gear for this was exactly to the Ruston drawings.  I take it that no changes were made?

I wish that I could get the hang of the various simulations to do the checking work for myself.  I have Hall’s, Ashton’s and Wallace’s and many years ago looked at Dockstader but sooner or later always seem to come up with an impenetrable stop.  Using Hall’s I currently get a “SQRT:DOMAIN error” error message followed by “Invalid floating point operation” when I attempt to get results after inserting the various dimensions.

With Stephen’s fine example I shall push ahead anyway, although if my ELIDIR also takes 35 years I shall be 118 before it is finished!

That’s very kind of you, John.

While I made a few other modifications to suit my own situation and interests, I didn’t make any changes due to an inherent design weakness, and didn’t change anything in the valve gear (or cylinders, for that matter) at all. Incidentally, Jennifer Ann’s build was generally described in ME magazine, between issues 4718-4725 inclusive (2nd June – 21st September 2023).

Having now run her for a few years, I can say with hand-on-heart that the Elidir design is fundamentally a good one.

As far as your specific question goes, the valve gear performs very well, certainly good enough for me. It notches all the way up once moving and I largely leave it there on the run.

If of interest, here’s a link to another YouTube video, published by a NJLS club member. You can see us buzzing round from about the 5-minute mark. The bit in the station where steam hisses but we don’t move is because I didn’t release the vacuum brakes, not because of a valve gear dead-spot. Operator error, as they say.

Best of luck with your build,

              Steve

                Steve,

Thank you very much indeed for the video link.  It is so re-assuring to see such a fine locomotive gliding along with no side to side wobble which shows how good the valve timing, setting and construction is.  Also most grateful for the ME article references.  A certain well known law dictated that last year I gave away about 60 years of Model Engineers which included your 2023 splendid series of articles containg inter alia the account of the building of JENNIFER ANN.

Fortunately (I hope) I know where my collection went to and should be able to borrow back the appropriate copies to scan.

                Many thanks again.

                John

                  No problem, John.

I’ve sent you a private message on the same subject.

                  Best regards

                  Steve
