Hi all, can anybody point me at plans for the clock bushing attachment to go with the universal pillar tool?

Apparently there is an in depth book about the pillar tool by George Thomas which includes it, but the only copy I’ve seen was going for 80 odd quid.

Building the Universal Pillar Tool was re-issued in a compendium called Workshop Techniques and is available from various sources for about £30 e.g.

Nothing about clock bushing tool in either Building the UPT or the Red  GHT workshop book that I have but would be interested if anyone finds it. Perhaps you are thinking of the one on Reeves 2000/Hemingways site?

Hemmingway do a kit for the bushing tool add on to the UPT, but they say “We are indebted to Mr James Batchelor for this design”, and include the construction notes and drawings in the kit. So it looks like its not one of George Thomas’ designs.

From the image on Hemmingway’s website the bits look fairly simple to design. There is a similar kit sold by Sherline as an add on to their mill for clock bushing which may give you some ideas.

Brilliant, thanks chaps. Found a copy of Workshop Techniques on ebay for 12 quid!

The Hemingway one was the one I saw but I’d rather make one than buy all the bits so just need the plan really.

The top half of the Batchelor bushing attachment looks like the same casting used for the sensitive drilling attachment.  Would you need anything better than the drill lever downfeed for inserting bushings?  I have no experience of bushing plates except seeing Steve do it on the Repair Shop.

Edit – looking more closely, the bushing tool seems to adapt the normal UPT arm.

                    On Roderick Jenkins Said:

I think that is the point – hence “universal pillar tool” not just a drill.

If you build the UPT there are THREE arms to machine

The standard UPT only uses 2 arm castings which are identical.  The Sensitive Drill addition uses a 3rd arm casting which differs in providing a support for a pillar for the drill downfeed lever and an attachment face for jockey pulleys.  It looks like Mr Batchelor has adapted the principle of the drill downfeed lever to fit on to the normal upper arm and designed a plate support for the lower arm.  Even though the bushing tool is not in GHT’s book, looking at the details of the Sensitive Drill found in the book and the picture of the bushing tool on the Hemingway website will probably supply sufficient information for manufacture.

The Clock Plate Bushing tool is included in my 1998 copy of Workshop Techniques.

I agree with Charles above, but the plans etc. are in an odd place in my 1998 copy.

Despite it’s title the book deals with only 2 main subjects –  the “Universal Pillar Tool” which is dealt with in Chapters 1-10, and “Indexing Methods” which are dealt with in Chapters 11-28.

And then tucked away at nearly the end of the book is Chapter 29 – “Clock-plate bushing tool” which is an attachment for the universal pillar tool. It’s as if this was a last minute addition, which is just as detailed as the rest of the book, but the chapter is very easy to overlook.

Despite there being only 2 main projects covered there are lots of detailed methods of construction which are relevant to other projects and make the book one of my “must have” books.

                                Hi

I have the UPT book and some part machined casting somewhere.

If anybody have a use for them send me an email and tell me what you want to pay, Mostly I’m just making the place a bit nearer for my widow (When the time comes).  Or wait and see what scrap man she pays to take away all the goodies she doesn’t send to the tip.

                                George

The book’s arrived and the elusive chapter is there. Brilliant!

Now all I have to do is make some sense of this gobbledegook haha.

I already have the UPT which I picked up for a tenner some time ago.
