As all my lathes are vintage with 3 of them running from overhead belts I often wonder what speed they are actually running at. I have been asked that question a few times by owners with the same lathe. I spotted a digital tachometer on Amazon for £11.62 and I tested it out today and it gives good results. It comes with lengths of reflective tape which you cut off a 12mm piece to stick on the chuck and then shine the red light on it

The overhead shaft with it’s current pulley setting gives gives 401 rpm, I currently have the belt down to the headstock on the slowest pulley which gives 266 rpm. Not tried the fastest pulley speed to compere yet .

I’ve had the same sort for quite a few years, tend to use it more to see what speed the model engines are running at.

Yes same here and mine is plugged into a wall wart. Its surprising how handy it can be.

I bought the exact same digital tachometer as in the photos th check the Tom senior with the VFD and three phase motor for the most useful speed range, which turned out to be from using the four belt speeds combined with 25-75 Hz settings. The Atlas lathe got tested the other week to find what the total range was.

              High range : 2050,   1272,   819,  525

              Low range : 952,   584,   375,  240

              High back gear :345,   212,   136,   87

              Low back gear : 158,   97,   62,   39

Notice that the uneven spacing which makes having 16 speeds less useful.

Smart & Brown got the speed spacing exactly right with the model A’s 12 speeds from 39 to 1440

See the article I wrote for ME about 4 years ago, put 1 on a drill press and another on an Myford S7. No drilling or cutting to fit it. Noel.

If your lathe has a 60 tooth gear then you can make up a little printed circuit together with a tiny magnet and segment display have a permanent rpm read out. There has been several very good articles in ME and MEW in the passed, one I remember, used VW car inti skid sensor to count the teeth on the super 7 bull wheel.

Thanks for all the replies, Some of the speeds of various settings on my machines are quite a bit lower than I thought so a good tool if you have vintage machines with cone bearings and oil pots!

I bought the same unit a while back to adjust the minimum speed on a router.
