Hi guys,

I'm John and I'm new to this forum. Pleased to meet you all!

I've recently wanted to get into hobby engine making, I own a mid-size milling machine and various other work shop tools. I don't own a lathe (hopefully will in the future). My question I was wondering was, is there any hobby engine projects that I can make with the milling machine?

any feedback would be great!

I don't know of any projects that could be made entirely on the milling machine. However if your mill is a universal mill. i.e.. Horizontal/vertical mill you can always rig up a tool post on the table and set the milling head horizontal.

I have done this in the past with a Tom Senior Mill for turning larger diameters than the Myford lathe could accommodate.

Getting a bit philosophical here: I think it's generally true to say that the smaller "round stuff" is quite readily available as off-the-shelf materials … and your mill could make 'most anything else.

Most designs would need some "production engineering" to avoid the use of difficult turned parts, but I think you would be able to produce an engine of some sort.

A rotary table for the mill might be a wise investment [and perhaps a good project]

I am sure you could make the simple oscillating engines on a milling machine with a rotary table. I spend a lot more time on my milling machine than the lathe.
