Ok so I needed to "run in" a small oscilator I am building..

      Compressor …too loud..

      Boiler .. to much fuss…

      Vacum oil remover….HMMM..

So yestaday this little machine ran for 4 hours on the oil vacumme thingy… quiet.. even allowed oil in air lube…works great.. stroke on pump every now and then to keep it going..and also cant over pressureise any thing..

might not work for much larger than cc size machines but is convient and clean.

You could do the running in the same way as I sometimes do for my Stirling Engines, by driving it with an electric motor, at a reasonably slow speed. Ian S C

Thanks..It had already had about an hour at 100 rpm..but was bored with that and wanted to ensure it stayed lubricated..Not the same prob with stirlings…

Was pleased that a few psi of vac. would spin it up.

Your right about boring, I set up the rig, then go way for an hour or so. I run the electric motor with an ammeter in line, and as the motor beds in the amps drop, although the last few I'v just put the heat on and run the motor, The last one is a little beam type one similar to a number of ones available from a number of makers. It has a stroke of 1/2", and a bore of 3/8", and the displacer cylinder is made from the steel casing from a AA nicad battery. Ian S C

Fan of Stirlings… built about 4… got some to run . ( two as tech demonstrateors.. not ment to run . one kit and one scratch built…ugly but runs ..)

"kit" built one abject failure.. will at some time remake it based on "proper" princeples.. but had to build it as per to see…runs just about but at too high temp(silver solder softens –EEK…. its going to get boron silicate glass hot end , when……

Tend to built steam models when I need a lift after trials and tribulations of stirlings….

                  Hi Jason ,

A quite fun way to run a small oscillator is to use another small oscillator driven by a motor as a compressor .

                  Regards ,

                  Michael Williams .

Just waiting for the day when one of my stirlings can drive the compressorwink

Want to build a thermo acoustic free piston generator…working up to it….

Physics of thermo acoustics not clear to me..so might be awhile…

btw Ben&Jerry are major investor in research in TA refridgeration…might just be green wash..but we can hope..

there is a TA plant powered by natural gas…that is to say the heat content…that compresses and liquifes for storage..saudi I think

                      Hi Ian,

have you a photo of that Beam stirling?

can you describe this bit of steel you found in a battery?

                      regards

David, no photo yet, must get round to it. The steel from the nicad battery is the outer casing, there is a photo of another small motor in my album that has a AA size nicad battery case for a displacer, this replaces the body of a white board marker that I started with, The aluminium conducted the heat a bit too fast from hot end to cold. With a meths burner the aluminium withstood the heat, unlike motors with gas firing. Better quit, getting a bit OT. Ian S C

Jerry – any chance you could point me to a reference to this, it's slightly related to something I was working on last year.

                          Thanks,

Thanks Ian – I am scouring the shops for suitable bits of SS to start me off – funny that design can be driven by the availability of a single component.

The local turkish cafe has some cups on the table that might work (used to hold single-serve sugar – what a waste); and the camping store has some stainless drink bottles that have really parallel sides but these start at $16 each and i am being cheap.

david, 90% of building SEs is hunting for materials, and looking at all sorts of things, and visulising them as future engine parts. At the moment I'm collecting stainless containers in the hope I'll get two that I can use to build a TMG, somewhere greater in dia than 100 mm. Ian S C

                                  Jason,

Many thanks for that, fascinating article, well explained. I was working a couple of years ago on the thermodynamics of LNG regas terminals, and looking for ways to utilise the exergy in a useful manner. This is at least interesting, though I'm not being paid to work on it any more…

BTW, apologies for calling you Jerry by mistake; careless of me.

David.. no worries, just initally confused…

Btw guys just "opened" a stainless vaccum flask…two nice stainless vessels close ( displacer close) fit and relatively cheap ( £1)…

Any one know what the small metalic blob held in with stainless gause ( in vac. space ) is ? my guess would be a getter of some sort…

now what to do with the double wall on the base ( hides evac. the nipple)..dont know

I have a nice toothbrush holder – spun stainless about 75mm diameter by the same deep. One day it would make a good hot cap. Looking for something smaller though, so Ian's rechargeable idea could be useful.
