In the plans and article I have seen axle horn have been riveted why? Is there some reason why they can not be held in with 6BA nut for a 5″ gauge loco.

Hi. Some loco designs call for fitted bolts – which are bolts with a cylindrical shank that fit tightly in their holes.

Using an ordinary bolt you would introduce potential slop.

Riveting is a joy if you’re worried about doing it.

          Cheers.

            Thanks MAC.
I have never tried riveting so my intention is to buy a bag or two of rivets at Bristol this weekend come home and have a try at it.
The reason for asking about the bolts was that I have drilled all the hole and they would nicely tap out to 6BA.
