      Hi,
I’m pretty much a beginner but have just bought an old Colchester Chipmaster lathe, having sold my Myford ML7.
The lathe still has a working variator fitted with a single phase motor.

The Chipmaster was shown to me working when I collected it but when I tried to use it at home, with the clutch lever engaged, the spindle barely rotated in low speed range or in high speed.
The gears apprear to be engaging correctly but the clutch apprears to need reassembly, adjustment or repair ?

Embarassingly, my problem is I unscrewed the knurled collar and then reassembled it perhaps the wrong way round… In any case I can’t manage to get it unscrewed again. (very red face!)

Is there anyone out there who can help me please?
I am located near Maidenhead / High Wycombe area and if there’s anyone nearby with expertise or familiarity with this lathe, I would happily pay you to come and take a look and hopefully get me back up and running.

Many many thanks for any assistance which would be gratefully received.

            Jerry,
Sign up to join and in the files section on the left hand side there is the manual on the Chipmaster.

              Hi John and John,
many thanks for your replies. The links were helpul and I have a manual, but I just cant find the detailI I need re assembly. I have joined the Yahoo group for Colchester lathes, thank you.

              To explain more clearly (maybe)…

              a) I removed the lock nut from the end of the clutch.

              b) I withdrew the cylindrical assembly with the three “fingers”, which presumably
              actuate the clutch?

              c) I then unscrewed the knurled collar which had a threaded toothed wheel inside. The manual also shows a wire clip (that I don’t have). Should this wire clip fit into the groove sround the inner centre of the splines in the knurled collar?

              d) The toothed knurled collar also has a groove around the outside so that the knurled rim areas are of unequal widths, one section is wider than the other with the groove between them. I don’t know which way round this collar should be fitted i.e. whether the wide or narrow knurled arim faces the headstock?

e)After removing the knurled collar and threaded toothed wheel, there is another toothed wheel on the spindle such that it could mate with the knurled collar? I am unsure whether when assembled correctly if the knurled collar should engage with the inner wheel all the time or disengage as the clutch lever is moved in and out?

I apologise for my non technical descriptions above but if it makes any sense to anybody, I would be grateful for any views or information?

              Thank you
              Jerry

                Hooray!
I have just managed to disassemble the screwed collar so everyting now apart.

If can get sight of a working Chipmaster lathe with the same clutch or get help from someone knowledgable, I’ll be ready to assemble or repair it as necessary.
