I have just had a phone call telling me that the service plan on two of my appliances have expired.

I told the caller I was amazed because I have not and have never had any service plans – replacement if it is something I can't fix is usually cheaper.

I then added some more words – probably not fair as the caller herself is not doing the scamming – but someone wiped their car down mine in the supermarket car park this morning and then drove off and I am still in a bad mood.

It makes you very wary and seem a bit unwelcoming when the call is in the middle of the morning, even when genuine.

Like yesterday when the lady with an accent I could not place asked if I am "Mr. Graham2" etc.

I affirmed this but very guardedly, wondering if one of my DRO sets had sent a message to Microsoft.

She was genuine though, seeking feedback on my recent interview as a Guinea-pig in "ELSA". No, not a small South American rodent swallowed by a Very Big African cat; a volunteer subject in the "English Longitudinal Study of Ageing".

I've been in that for a long time now, since I was 60? 50? I forget! There was of course a hiatus caused by Covid, though they tried on-line interviews with those who have the means – I don't.

I am very wary of being asked any question as to my identity. I w would reply that he's gone for a while, can I take a message or contact details for him to get in touch. Guarantee call will be terminated pretty quickly, so they can try the next no. in hope of a response like they want. Could always bugger about, pretending to be hard of hearing or confused, just to keep them on the line as long as possible to delay their next call.

I haven't found that works at all these days. If they haven't got me talking on their terms within about 5 sec, they give up and move on.

What I'd like to do is let my wife answer the phone. She has dementia and would run rings around them before they realise. Unfortunately she might also press buttons (what "nasty" does happen when you do that?).

Anyone know of a buttonless phone?

I AM often confused AND Hard of hearing all the time

It makes scam calls very odd for me, hell knows what it's like for them

They are probably used to confusion and hearing problems, and it may even encourage them because they'd sense these as weaknesses ripe for exploiting.

I am usually blunt with them. I do not shout swear words at them. I do that to the silent calls, knowing I am shouting only at a machine. I do though say things like:

"No you are not…." [from 'The Windows Corporation' or 'Bank Security' – though the latter are usually recordings.]

… "and no it has not!" [ My computer "reporting a fault or attack".]

                    Sometimes I then add,

"And I know you are liars and thieves!"

Then hang up immediately, before the caller can.

Scams and scam calls and emails are a fact of life these days, ignore them and move on.

Some simple things to think about :-

How have they got your phone number or email address?

This particular scam has been doing the rounds for years as has most of the scams (Microsoft, internet provider, parcel needing to be delivered etc)

It never ceases to amaze me how gullable people are.

I do think phone companies and internet providers (and banks!) could do a lot to aleviate this problem, but at the end of the day it is down to the individual to use some common sense.

Interestingly, since moving onto full fibre (i.e no phone line) I have only had 1 spam call(on my mobile) and that was so obvious it never got answered.

There are lots of more sophisticated scams around at the moment that are more relevent to todays problems such as Covid related scams, energy payment scams etc.

Why do people believe them? probably because as a nation we are too trusting to believe whatever we are told.

Plus, of course greed comes into a lot of scams, Yes! I would like a large payment into my bank account from the tax man, but a few seconds of logical thought would soon indicate that is not going to happen.

Unfortunately some people are easily persuaded otherwise.

Lots of scams (usually old ones) are regularly posted on here, I woild like to think ALL on here are somewhat above average inteligence and would not be taken in.

Would you really give your bank details to a phone caller or email sender????

Do you really believe you will get millions of pounds from that nice Nigerian man who somehow got your email address.

There are hundreds of millions of computers in the world running Windows software, how can anyone let alone Microsoft be able to track every single one and get their phone number and/or email address?

Have you ever had to PAY for a missed parcel delivery?

Does that nice Russian/far eastern lady really want to talk to you about model engineering.

It is strange they all want financial help in getting to the UK (and/or ttheir families).

I could go on and on but I am beginning to bore myself now, use your common sense, you have worked hard for what you have got. Don't let these low lifes win.

                          JUST THINK

Have a nice scam free Xmas everyone, I hope you all get what you wish for.

I have had a sultry sounding red headed Russian sounding WOman tell Me she was setting in My driveway waiting for Me to come out. I did not even look out the windows. If She would get a hold of Me I would probably be crinkled up for ages.wink

I don't think you understand how this operates. One in a million believe them so they make a million calls to find that one.

What's being discussed is the nuisance value of the other 999,999 calls. As far as I can see, everyone here is just as informed as you profess to be. They're just commiserating on the nuisance.

When faced with form that requires (mandatory) a telephone number (to assist delivery?) simply use exchange number followed by 000 000, computer sees enough digits even if it is unusable.
