I am thinking about making a 5" gauge steam locomotive.

The rivetting of hornblocks to the frame appears to be common practice. Is this just following old full size methods? It strikes me that small size rivetting is difficult and unlikely to be very effective.

I cannot see any thing wrong with using countersunk set screws, through the frame, screwed into the hornblock, at a medium torque, and then locked with a nut and high strength Loctite? The nut would be tighted to a higher torque.

Have I got this all wrong?

Small size rivetting is very effective and quite easy even for someone with ten thumbs like me. It's your locomotive, do as you wish. The only people you need to please when building are you and the boiler inspector (And he won't give a damn about the hornblocks!).

I would probably think rivetting is easier rather than faffing about countersinking, loctiting etc.

The main advantage of rivits is that they also swell in section into the hole so you do not get any movement like you could between a screw and it's clearance hole
