So foolishly I have purchased a SX2 Mill supposedly with electrical issues? Can anyone tell me where and how I get to the extra fuse that is shown on the wiring diagram in the manual. Its shown as a 5amp it looks like it goes into the control box ?

Try Arceurotrade, advert in top RH corner! They are very helpfulll. If its the one off Ebay, I looked at it, but it went beyond my budget, considering the price of a new board if required.

Yes it was the one but as nearly 4 figure price new I thought I would risk it even with a new PCB it will be about half price, Fingers crossed not PCB

I think there is a fuse holder on the back of the switch box almost directly behind the speed control knob

JasonB is correct, on my around 7 year old mill round the back there is a DIN type connector and a screw in fuse holder with a small glass fuse.

So I collected the mill. The issue was or is the speed controller ? He has purchased a new

one with same result ? Could it be an iffy one ? Also trying to find out where he purchased

the new one should not make a difference but who knows ?
Any other ideas would be welcome !

Disconnect the leads from the motor and connect a 230 volt Light bulb to the control box motor leads.

Turn the speed control to the lowest speed then power up the control and turn up the speed control the light should get brighter. The control is O.K. if the light gets bright.

A 12 volt car battery will test the motor to run it allbeit slowly. If their is a short circuit in the motor the leads will get very hot super quick. Best done outside and away from flamables.

Not sure if the light bulb test works with the brushless motors as they have additional wires that go back to the board to monitor speed etc

The SX 2 mill ( and the SC3 lathe for that matter..) have a multi phase brushless motor with position feedback to the control board.

Fault finding on these machines is slightly more difficult than the DC motored predecessors and the 'light bulb test' is inappropriate…

The control board uses an Atmel microprocessor to derive the multipole signals feeding three sets of power driver devices energising the motor windings. Position feedback to the micrcontroller closes the loop.

It would unwise to dismantle the motor……

I have just looked at my SX2 wiring diagram, assuming the circle with a 'M' in it is the motor, it has 8 wires going to the controller! If i had won it, my plan was to replace all the electronics with a Arduino controlled brushed motor, which I have used in other projects.

Dunno if the mill is the same, close to, or different – but it might be worth watching the ‘Blondihacks’ video where Quin’s mill motor gave up the ghost on her Precision Matthews mill.

That was (or might have been) an expensive repair.

Check out ‘mill explosion and repair’ on her channel to see some of the odd misfits (of component parts). As axminster appear to charge a couple hundred quid more than another supplier (I think that may cover any warranty claims over a couple of years – but has expired anyway), your second hand machine might yet cost nearly as much as a brand new one – with warranty. Hopefully it won’t be quite as bad as that… Good luck.

NDIY about right as usual.

A new board is £170 and a motor is £185

I think the problem will be in deciding which one is duff – or have to buy both!

Does anyone have control circuit diagrams – or at least close-up photos of each side of the board?

I think nobody has quite said what the fault is yet.

Sometimes the motor blows the board, people then buy a new board and the motor blows that too…

Test the board using a 240V light bulb instead of a motor.

Test the motor with a 12V car battery (it should turn at a couple of hundred rpm). You can also use a multimeter to test for shorted or open windings.

The fuse mounted on the control box is wired downstream of the main power switch, rated at 5 A for a 240 V AC supply serving the whole machine.

There is a further fuse mounted on the main pcb serving the power electronics section ( rating not known at this time)

So stupid question but the system has 3 fuses, 1 in mains plug, 1 in control box and one on the PCB surely they are there to protect the system ?? I think the one in my control box has blown so off latter to get a couple more. I will need to strip out to find other fuse size ?

The fuse in the mains plug is there purely to protect the mains lead from plug to machine – nothing else.

So I have installed the SX2 into my workshop and tried it

and it appears to work ! However seems a bit sluggish to

work. Is that as it should be? If not any suggestions ??

Just for clarity, you now have 2 circuit boards? The seller had bought a new one.
