      I've seen quite a few models of stationary steam engines with guard railings. How do you make and secure yours.

          Good question; am looking to make further models with rails etc. I understand if you have the scale right you can get model ships railings & stanchions from model ships dealers.

            I'd drill through the base and screw them on from below, it allows you to rotate them so the rail holes are in line.

            As for making use round bar, cross drill for rails first and then turn from that, mill if I want any squares where the rails go or at base, saw/part off, face bottom end true and then drill and tap for fixing.

              Very carefully, with form tools. Easiest if drilled before forming, although that obviously makes them more fragile…

                Brass balls drilled both ways then silver soldered to the upright. Might be easier to turn the uprights with 2 very small steps to locate the balls, drill one way, silver solder, then drill t'other way

                  If for aesthetics only. 3-D printing, for monotonous regularity, could be an alternative? Particularly for uprights?

                      If you want just a single rail and will be painting them then use some split pins and a brass rod they can be soft soldered.

                      The other alternative is to turn you own with the number of balls then cross drill the balls for the rails this would be for larger stanchions the same as Neil shows
