Just putting my Warco Super Major Milling Machine gearbox back together.

The operating instructions say to use a non-detergent SAE 30 oil.

I don't have SAE 30, but I do have ISO 68 (which Harrison recommends).

According to the conversion chart below, they are very similar.

My question is, would it be suitable to use ISO 68 instead?

Yes, no probs, or use 80/90w gearbox oil, whichever is easier to hand.

SAE 30 is VW Beetle aircooled engine oil, diff oil is OK if there's no bronze in the box

              +1

Lathes and mills aren't fussy about oil, but watch out for performance oils. High pressure oils often contains additives that attack Copper, and Copper is used in some bearings and gears. Check the Oil's label for any mention of incompatibilities. Plain oils are fine.

I went through the what oil to use a while back. The advise I got here is ISO VG 68/ SAE 30 Hydraulic oil is fine. Also a lot cheaper than the little bottles of 'special' lathe/mill oil some companies sell.
