In reply to a question about finding brass rail,Ian Sc mentioned scrapyards.

This brought back happy memories of a bygone age when you could ramble into your local scrapyard on a Saturday morning and mooch around to see what you might find. Happy days !! Alas those days are gone. Now,they wont let you past the gate, even if you come with hard hat, dust mask, face shield, ear protection, gloves, knee pads and boots, together with enough insurance to sink the Q E 2. !! You can,t even get into a timber yard anymore to pick out your boards, and as for getting into a steel supplier,s store——-Out of the question !!

Is it just me,or have others found the same thing ?

Where have all the scrapyards gone ? Gone to graveyards every one, ect, ect.

In Australia, scrap metal is big business. Most scrap metal merchants buy scrap in bulk from independent operators who scour the countryside looking for old cars, trucks, farm machinery etc, anything they can get their hands on cheaply. They advertise top prices for scrap metal and they come and take it all away in big trucks never to be seen again. Countless relics having significant heritage value have vanished from rural communities as a result. It all gets sorted (ferrous/non-ferrous) with aluminium usually being treated separately, then is shredded and baled before shipping off to china to come back as cars, washing machines, fridges etc.

Most local authority waste 'recycling' centres are simply collection points for the big scrap metal merchants or 'waste management' companies (read landfill operators) and scavenging from these centres is strictly prohibited and this is strongly enforced. The only way to get anything scrap is to go to smaller manufacturing or fabrication shops and ask. Most are willing to let you have their offcuts for next to nothing, but don't hope for much more than standard hot-rolled sheet, plate or structural steel sections. Non-ferrous is almost impossible to get in any decent size or quality.

I miss a proper scrapyard, although a few year's ago I found one where I was able to go and snarf the parts I needed of a decaying mondy. It was at ground level though, not the same as climbing four cars high to grab an Opel Blitz hubcap off an old Ascona to decorate the ignition coil of my Manta! (Standard OMOC upgrade).

As for steel stockholders, IME they are happy to let you peruse the short ends, although my closest has them all listed on a computer so you have to go to the office and tell them "I want the 10" of 2" EN1aPb" and hope they can find it on the system! My favourite place throws everything in a bag and comes up with a reasonable price per kilo…

I'm afraid the days of the accessible scrap-yard have gone. Mine now has a high fence with razor wire on top, 'No Visitors" signs, and at least two bad-tempered Alsatians roving inside.

Partly to keep children safe but mostly to keep out thieves and/or nosey Parkers. Scrap metal is far more valuable than it used to be. The owner of my local scrapyard is currently serving a 6 year sentence for receiving large quantities of stolen metal and organising thefts; electric cable including signal wiring off the railway, man-hole covers, garden-gates, road signs, safety fencing from building sites, lead roofing, etc, etc….

When I was a lad me and Gramp went to the local scrapyard on a Sunday morning followed by a bottle of IPA in the local hostelry, always late for dinner but pleased with the pile of rust we brought home, Nan wasn't impressed

In NZ a demolition yard is not a scrap yard, but a place where architectural bits and pieces from demolished buildings go, and available for resale to the general public.

In Christchurch there is also a recycling shop that sells "rubbish", The Eco Shop. They sell anything, from a Home Built Aircraft, to a tea spoon. Books, records, DVDs. sporting goods. Every city should have a shop like this. I got a new catcher for my lawn mower, it cost me $5.

My thanks to all who replied to this thread. Seems to be the same all over. My local "Recycling Center" is just as another Member said,a collection point for the bigger scrap merchants, they wont let you take anything from the scrap metal skip. A pity, because I,ve seen some good stuff there,at times.

Cable stealing is well known here too, even from the pylons ! Brave men !

To Ian S c,yes we have those yards here too,but they deal mostly in gates, railings, stonework, windows, doors ect, saved from old buildings, not the kind of stuff to be of much interest to us,although they do have some very nice stuff from time to time.,ideal for restoring old houses.

But still the lament for the old time scrap yard goes on,and on.!!

CF Booths in Rotherham. Highly recommended, they even cater for railway enthusiasts!

We don't have Elf and Safety here.

You break a leg, chop your fingers off – your fault.

We also still have scrapyards where the public can route around.

                        Marvelous.

At my favourite yard they let me look in the bins and pull out likely treasure.
                          Then we go through the ritual of weighing it, to within 10 grammes, then to the office to 'calculate' a price;
which myseriously always works out to be a multiple of £10 ?
                          wink

We have a scrappy nearby in Hamilton (NZ) who will let you pick out what you want and weigh it. I got quite a lot of 1mm stainless sheet to make the funnel and the boiler cladding for my steam launch, and a few other useful bits too. Being in the middle of dairy country, they have quite a lot of stainless, but I also got quite a lot of inch thick 6061 aluminium once.

There is also one of those demolition recyclers, but they seem a bit pricey to me. Still, we did get some spare concrete tiles for our roof there at a reasonable price.

There are also car wreckers where you can go and take off the parts you need yourself, if they happen to have them.Bring your own tools. I got four space saver spares to fit my boat trailer when I was living in Auckland and had to get the trailer and boat under a door that didn't open high enough. Bit of a mission changing all the wheels before pushing it in under the door, but at least it didn't have to happen many times there.

We had a change to the regulations here in NSW Australia , you used to be able to take scrap to your local scrap yard and they would pay you for it but because some people made a living out of breaking into factories and stealing metal especially copper they now require you to have an ABN ( basically a registered business ) before they will give you a cent for your scrap ( the scrappies that obey the law that is ) This has an added advantage that is helps stop thieving mongrels knocking off locos from model clubs and hacking them up for the copper boiler but there are still some dodgy scrap merchants out there and i hope they all get caught and punished !

I have found recently there are quite a few metel merchants selling offcuts on ebay , sometimes the prices are reasonable sometimes not but always woth checking out and i have picked up a few bargains here and there.

The one here in Essex has got a parts yard down the end,you have to walk through the main yard to get to it. They tell you to go in and have a look and take what you want off the cars.

My local scrapyard is my main source of metal, and as I take all my scrap there anyway, he usually says "take it", but I always insist on giving him something, that way I am never afraid to ask. Unfortunately at the moment, having a wander round the yard is impossible, as it is full to the gate, and about 12 feet high!

I worked in a steel works 60s-70s and it had 3 scrapyard No 3 yard being by far the biggest and the one where all the 'car' scrap was tipped, in the early years I often had to go to No3 yard to repair the cable on the cranes magnet 15 min job then 30 mins poking through the scrap you could almost say you could find any part you wanted. One could find starter motors and dynamos by the dozen and you were allow to buy them at scrap price which I did I then refurbished then fitting new bearing, brushes and Bendix which I then sold on for a small profit never short of buyer's there were 2200 employees wink

Silly old Duffer's remark sounds like he's in Johannesburg South Africa, for man hole covers disappeared long ago and was replaced with plastic ones that's now vanishing too, not to mention copper and aluminium from overhead lines. There's a huge recycling depot for plastic and paper now part of a scrapyard. They don't mind one from browsing for any material though. I buy a lot of material from them, aluminium cyl. heads and engine blocks for casting projects.
