      Phew, that was close.

I was nearly drawn into buying an entry-level Bott industrial drawer unit by all this multi-colour fortnight nonsense. But I dont care how much it's reduced by, a final check showing a £400 shopping basket knocked the idea right of me. That's almost the cost of a small mill…

Been scouring Gumtree etc for a while now looking for something cost effective, without luck. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? I need something around 50cms wide, 60cms deep and 85cms high (plus or minus) – with lots of drawers.

      Cheers, Colin

What do you want to put in the drawers?

I use multidrawers designed for office use so the drawers are A4 + in size 1.5 to 2” deep and 12 to 15 drawers very usefull for parts tools etc

I think I have 18 in my workshops

If you are willing to wait a little you could sign up with Cromwell Tools / Zoro (why do they need a second brand?) or even Machine Mart and wait for a 20% off e-mail.

I recommend a visit to The Range.

If you can tolerate using plastic boxes for things they have lots of excellent stacking types in all sizes and generally cheaper than what you want to put in them!

As Ian suggests its worth a root round the used office furniture suppliers to see if there is anything that will do. Some of it will approach Bott, Listra et al in quality and load capability.

Ikea "Helmer" are about half the width you want and somewhat on the cheap'n cheerful side but they are only £30. I have a seriously overloaded, one drawer full of big drills for example, stacked pair. Runner-less drawers are thin and flimsy but whatever works. £10 out of the local free ad rag maybe 15 years ago as temporary solution whist I found something better like Ian's multi-drawers. Which won't now happen until they finally do break.

For bigger items filing cabinets can often be got on free if you haul away terms. Not appropriate for your current needs but worth remembering.

                Clive.

I'm a big fan of Bisley drawer units. They hold a massive amount of stuff.

Plus one for the Bisley drawers, I picked up a set from a charity shop for £7,95

The problem with many industrial drawers, Bott, Polestor etc, is they are often too deep for home workshops, usually 700 mm plus. I’ve got a couple of Secondhand Snap On roll cabs, which are expensive, but are less than 600 deep and will always be worth what i paid.

There are a few on the Cottrels auction site, currently at around £150 plus 39%. Full of tools too.

Plus another for Bisley especially if you can get their earlier ones.

I personally do find that the later ones are just not as substantial. They are about fit for pupose in a latter day office but struggle a bit in the workshop for heavier items..

The earlier ones seem to have been well over engineered for office use, hence their suitability for the workshop is very good.

Homebase had some pretty sturdy looking metal Tool Chests in stock last time I was in there, various sizes some multi drawer units plus larger ones on wheels as well.

I was not in the market for one so did not investigate on a close up basis, might be worth checking if you are near one of their stores though.

                                Thanks for various suggestions.

The Bisleys are an obvious pick, but I want to maximise the use of a particular corner on the headstock end of my S7, and want something deeper. For the same reason I'm not really looking for a tool cab, but rather something with drawers. And I had seen that good Polestor unit on fleabay, but it still end up north of £300 by the time I get it to Scotlandshire. So the search continues.

Meanwhile, I continue to produce stacking trays by eating a lot of seasonal fruit….

Ikea kitchen cabinets can be fitted with shallow drawers all the way up, either face mounted with handles, or flush to sit behind a door. My son's machines are standing on benches supported by these, and the drawers don't seem to suffer for being full of tools.

I bought one of these, very happy with it, not snap-on quality but for the price you cannot go wrong

You could try Halfords – they have some very good offers at the moment (until 30th nov I think) – which are on this page **LINK**

Ikea also do a small metal drawer cabinet, much flimsier than Bisley of course, but I have a couple riveted together to form a base for my little bandsaw with an mdf top and they are surprisingly sturdy. But given the price of the Halfords drawer units at the moment they are much more of an attractive proposition.

Apart from Gumtree local auction sales often have various metal cabinets. I have picked up a couple in the past quite cheaply at my local auction house. Mind you that was before industrial metal became trendy with the urban trendsetters. The other thing that often goes for peanuts at auctions is old well made brown wooden chest of drawers which can be ideal for storing things that are prone to rust.

Have a look on the IKEA site and search for HELMER. 6 drawer self assembly painted steel cabinet. I've got one and it's handy for small tools. £30.
