Hi Jimmy. Usually the user guides that come with heavy machinery have lifting instructs in them. If not contact Warco direct they will be happy to tell where to lift it. Not too sure on removing the head but usually running it right down to the bottom of the ways should get it below the top of the column and give minimum height. Then its probably easier to remove the motor if it is above the column top. The thing to remember is if you take the head off do you have the height to put it back on when its on the bench or its stand.

After doing what XD says above, I lifted mine with flat fabric straps around the circular part between the head and the vertical slide, where the protractor strip is mounted. I left the motor in place. I had my son to hand to stop the mill from swinging about on the cable, and carefully positioned it on a wooden stand. Take it easy, it is very heavy, although perhaps less intimidating to those already accustomed to moving machines or engines.

When I bought a bigger lathe I found that I'd miscalculated by 200mm the space needed to maneuver the engine crane plus lathe inside my garage. As a result it was difficult to get the lathe up against the wall as planned. Needing time to think, I plonked the lathe down at right-angles to the wall instead. By happy accident this position gave much better access for gear changes, so I've left it where it is.

However, I did get useful suggestions from the forum about moving heavy objects in tight spaces: basically some combination of rollers, levers, wooden blocks, and perhaps a jack. The rollers can be lengths of pipe.

Perhaps someone who has actually done it could provide more detail. I don't believe it's difficult, just sweaty and time-consuming compared with using a crane.
