What are these (from)?

I tend to accumulate stuff, I bid on the mercer dial test indicator and have to take the 5 boxes of assorted tools that come with it. On this theme cold anyone recognise what the following items are or what they are from.

Looks like some sort of leadscrew. Can anyone recognise what it might be from?

What appears to be a partially finished saddle to a lathe. Vee way would fit a myford if you have it a larger than usual gib. There is also an oversized gib with it which might be a standard to machine V ways at or something similar.

Now all those parts were from the same lot. The individual parts look incredibly generic and I doubt anyone would ever recognise them but my hope is someone out there might have a kit or machine that all these parts came from.

On a seperate lot I got this big batch of what look like some sort of plumbing all bunged in a paint can. Caked in grease. Apart from if anyone knows what they are does anyone know a good way to dissolve all the grease off of them so I can get a better look? (small question not worth its own thread)

Hi Rainbows, as JS says last lot are grease gun parts and they will clean up with 2 Lt's of paraffin. No idea about the rest, except a visit to the scrap man maybe.

There is no such thing as scrap, only under appreciated material. :^)

I emptied out the entire paint can (it was messy) and loe and behold lots of oil and grease nipples, stuck in a layer of grease like fossil in sedimentary rock. Good work there. Anyway paint can is now full of parafinn, didn't have a full two litres so maybe if I let it sit overnight by tomorrow it will have got the worst off.

There is very little scrap material. Only when it is already swarf, or too small to hold for further processing, is it scrap.

It will always come in useful one day, (assuming that we have space enough, and live long enough to find a use for it) A friend has made a small oscillating engine from the legs of a 13 Amp plug. 3/8 BSP brass pugs are good raw material for small bushes, and so on.

The big dovetailed bit was probably the start of a project for a mini mill or grinder perhaps. The fat gib was probably going to be held by some screws from above, slightly slackened for adjustment – some commercial lathes did that.

The stumpy threaded bar might just be a handle or a mounting point when bolted through a plate.

The first item has a square thread so not for fixing but intended to be adjusted a lot. Possibly a depth stop. SOrt of looks like it could be part of an industrial sewing machine or loom.

It took 30 years for a piece of “under-appreciated material ” to be put to use in my workshop! One windy day a paper thin sheet of ali about 8″ x 6′ got grabbed and impounded in the might come in handy one day store. When I made up an led ring light for the vertical mill, I needed a small shade around it. That thin and light ali sheet supplied it.A ring of 43 leds 130mm Dia supposedly for a Mercedes and 2 off, silly price from Hong Kong. Intend to do same for bench drill with the other ring.
