I was pawing through a few boxes of my late father's stuff today and found a few 5/16" square HSS tool blanks marked: "5/16 MOMAX Cleveland G." Before I go to the trouble of grinding any I thought I would solicit comments about the quality. I can find Cleveland blanks on the net but nothing on the "G" grade.

I don't know about the 'G' but the Cleveland MOMAX is a really excellent HSS in my experience.

Thanks Pete. I will give them a try on my Speed 10.

Good stuff, best at slow speed on tough metals(ie backgear) and great for shaper machine work

Saves you using carbide on tuff jobs

Harder to grind if it's the good stuff too

Thanks. I ground one. Tough to grind is right…. very tough but they hone to a super edge. Excellent results with test cuts on a piece of 316 SS rod @ about 450 RPM; very slow feed and .0015 cut. I am happy. My dad offered me these blanks a few years ago but I passed on the offer as I was using only indexable tools at the time.

Don't ever plunge cool, or you will microscopically crack the edges. Air cooling only when grinding

Now you tell me (ha-ha). Thanks again. I will keep that in mind. I think I will start grinding a set sometime soon.
