Hello all, just purchased this Taylor Hobson grinder unit from a friend who didnt really know what it was and neither do I !. Its a (heavy) nicely made bit of kit and presume its for grinding some sort of cutters, so the question is, what would have been its purpose ?. Many thanks.06032015171.jpg

Looks like good kit. Do a search online and you may find a manual for it.

Hello, Ive been online, but nothing about this particular unit. Yes, perhaps it is something to do with pantographs. The chap I bought it from , said his son took 2 TH pantographs down the scrapyard. sad

                Roger,

Have a look at this page

If you want to grind engraving cutters, you need the little holder, just visible at the front of the picture.

… If you don't, then maybe sell it to me?

Michael, thanks for the link, at least I know what its for now . Just out of interest, inside the access plate, theres a name tab, Central Electricity Generating Board.

Roger, its without doubt an engraving cutter grinder. You should have a set of small shaped templates that fix to the cutter holder and allow you to create the correct cutting angles and tip size.If you use it then it may need a new white grit cup wheel. You can get diamond rubber bonded wheels as well. There should also be a small V shaped spanner for setting the cutters in the right position for grinding the angles.

It will grind the ends of small end mills up to about 6 mm dia. You will not get secondary relief though on the lip of the cutter only one angle. Again there should be templates for 2 flute end mils and 4 flute end mills.

It should run nice and quietly and smoothly, off hand grinding is not recommended. Use the jigs only as it is easy to pit the wheel.

I used one for 15 years and the engraving machine.

                    Clive

Sounds like its also a drill sharpener.

Clive, I thought there were a set of cams to provide back-off to the cutting face when the cutter was rotated so no further secondary clearance was needed.

No its definitely not a drill sharpener, the auctioneers dont know what it is and that is their best guess.

The previous answers are correct, it is for sharpening single lip engraving cutters with the correct angle and relief.
This is the cutter holder details.

I have a David Dowling one which is very similar in principle to the Taylor Hobson, but unless you are grinding engraving cutters it is of limited use, it is possible with a fair bit of work to modify it into a general cutter grinder of sorts.

Given that most of these grinders will have lost the holders illustrated above and the many regular T&C grinders used by MEs won't have such anyway I think an MEW design for handling engraver bits is called for.
