Is a D14 camlock chuck the same as a D1-4 chuck.

My lathe takes D1-4 chuck fitting. It has 3 pins 15.88mm dia as per this list

            Alan,

Please forgive me for hi-jacking your thread, but this seems an appropriate place to ask the question.

I have a lovely "MultiSize" collet chuck, in D1-3 fitting, but presently have no room to accommodate a Colchester Bantam or similar lathe.

Can anyone suggest a design for fitting this chuck onto a Screwed-Nose lathe spindle?

I realise that this is far from ideal, but it would allow me put the chuck to use!

Note: I am happy to dismantle the chuck, but not to butcher it.

THIS may help you make an adaptor, but it doesn't explain the locking mechanism.

As the camlock studs screw out I wonder if it would be possible to use their holes to take 3 custom made bolts to hold the chuck to a suitable backplate which can be threaded for your existing lathe. The backplate would just need machining like a D series nose to locate into the back of the chuck.

I'm currently machining a D1-3 "Camlock" spindle nose adaptor that will allow me to use all my lathe chucks, faceplate etc (inc my Multisize collet chuck) on the milling machine table or rotary table. I can tell you it's a pretty complex business and not one to be undertaken lightly.

The Camlock mating surfaces are very critical and you need to machine both the taper and the mating faces to great accuracy if you want decent location (runout). The pins mainly act in tension to keep the taper engaged – and as brute force torque drivers.

The cam design is quite involved. I've almost finished the main body and I'm expecting the cams to be quite "interesting" to produce.

I have the full std and drawings for the Camlock series, courtesy of some detective work by John Stevenson and I also have 3D CAD part models and 3D assemblies now for the parts I'm making, if you want to get a better feel of what's involved.

You might get lucky and find a screw version if you advertise on these pages, then you could shift your D1-3 similarly. That would be a lot less work!

                        Many thanks for this !!

I would greatly appreciate copies of your files, if only as a warning!
