Silverline long reach air tool for Top/Crosslide mounting

Hi – I am thinking about buying a Silverline 1/4" straight extended long reach die angle grinder/cut-off tool for mounting onto the Top/Crosslide of a Myford 7 lathe. Before paying a visit to that well known auction site for the purhase has anyone had the experience of using the tool this application? The long reach of the tool would appear to make it quite suitable for achieving a secure fixing.

Having had good and cheap air tools, all I would say is you get what you pay for. They will have revs but may not have much grunt. What purpose do you intend to put it too ? Noel

You may struggle with grinding, except very light cuts. You will need a good air supply.

Air tools are horrible. Then you turn them on and they get worse.

This works well for what you mentioned, and I also use it for milling fluted knobs:

ER11 collets, drops onto the QCTP just like any other tool, and adjustable speed via the power supply. Cost about £80 all in from Ebay. I already had the 10mm square bar to mount it to the tool holder.

What wattage and voltage is required for a "good" spindle drive?

Would 300watts be enough to do more than just light spotting and drilling?

I have a Sealey cut off – hopeless thing that sprays oil everywhere and stalls as soon as look at you.

First question might be: What capacity is your compressor (or what was it when new). That is free air delivery, not capacity by displacement, and pressure rating. Next: Is this a 4 bar rated tool?

No experience with this offering, but as above, Electric, variable speed with slower speeds (for use with a larger diameter blade) would be my choice.

Leaving aside how well either will work as planned, I have used both a cheap Silverline die grinder and a comparably priced US Pro tool. I found the US Pro die grinder was much more effective, needing less air, but still having plenty of power. A friend uses the US Pro die grinders in his business restoring cars and finds them to last well.

I bought them off Ebay about 4 years ago, so a link won't help you much.

A search for ER spindle motor will soon find what you need. I bought the motor, clamp, power supply and collets as a set, which comes to about £120 now. A length of 10mm square screwed to the motor clamp to fit a tool holder will have the the motor in use in a few minutes.

I used a high speed spindle it comes with a collet set built in and power supply with speed controle.

I only had to make a bracket to hold spindle and enclosure for power supply etc.

I bought one of the Silverline extended nose air die grinders and have been very pleased with it. I believe the extended shank is 3/4" diameter, just a little bit bigger than the chuck at the end. It comes with 1/4" ans 1/8" collets and I have just got 6mm and 3mm collets through the post today.

The 6 and 3mm collets came from ebay, they look alright and the bores are ground and they were very cheap.
