I have a Myford 254 Variable speed lathe with a rattling noise within the headstock. Taking the top off doesn't show anything so it the rattle must be further in. I am thinking of stripping the headstock down, but I am afraid in not knowing where to start. It is obvious that the spindle has to come out but taking the back gear arrangement off is the first job, how do i get this off. Can anyone help with this please. I think the rattle has been caused by the electronic brake arrangement stopping the spindle too fast. The rattle is worse when I run the spindle in reverse.

Have you got a copy of the manual? I have a 254 V plus and a manual. It doesn't tell you how to dismantle it but there are useful exploded diagrams. Let me know if you want scans of relevant pages.

Don't know the machine, but before starting to strip, try to isolate more closely, the area where it is making the noise.

Screwdriver to ear, or stethoscope needed.

Does a visual check show any parts with excessive clearance, either radial or longitudinal? Presumably, no obvious missing teeth or loose bits.

Stupid question, there is nothing rattling about in the bore of the Mandrel is there?

Thanks for the reply Ian. I have a Myford manual for the lathe but it has no exploded diagram for the V Plus. If you have a diagram for this model it will help a lot. What is the procedure to get a print to me?.

img_20200323_184050.jpgI have uploaded photos of the headstock assy and the associated parts list to my album on here. Looking on my phone it looks reasonably clear. I could email images to you if you give me an email address.

Have you disengauged the all the change gears and run it up? then the motor and run it in both directions? I would contact those chaps that visit you to service or repair Myfords, might give you some useful pointers

I have been in touch with these chaps previously regarding the 254 but unfortunately, at that time at least, they were restricting their activities to the 7 series machines that they were most familiar with.

Take the lid off the headstock and turn it in both directions by hand before doing anything else.

Ian. Again I thank you for your reply. The drawings you included are in fact the same ones as I have in the Myford manual are infact the ones for the 254 plus and not the V plus. The difference is the belt drive from the motor. The 254 plus is a single V belt and the V plus is a poly-v- belt. I have infact managed to strip the head stock and found the 2 main gear wooddruff keys are loose in the spindle. Intend to make new ones out of a cap headed bolt.

I am thinking that Myford didn't upgrade the maual. Again many thanks.

                          Good News!

Sounds like you have found the source of the problem.

The tighter the fit, the less likely for the problem to recur.

A satisfactory conclusion. Good to hear

                          Howard
