A happy Christmas to all. Has any one fitted a power assisted mill head lift to any of these machines or something similar. A web search revealed images of head hand wheel relocated to bottom of column however no article write up.

Do you mean a telescopic gas ram simply to reduce the effective weight of the head while manually winding, or do you mean something like a battery operated screwdriver to drive the moved hand wheel?

Don't know about a "power assisted mill head" …. I just use a socket (from a socket set) on a suitable adaptor in an electric drill/driver (with the clutch set so i don't overdrive).

Lots of articles on the internet, Youtube, etc about adding a power feed to the Z-axis screw. Mostly using a stepper motor for CNC conversion but no reason a standard gearmotor could not be used instead just to raise and lower the head.

Hi i did a convesion to my Chester mill 16V to move the handwheel and fit a motor. I changed the leadscrew to a ball screw moved the handweel to a 90 deg bevel gear and fitted a stepper motor after fitting a geared motor which was a failure as at low speed it was jerky and no power. It is perfect to fast traverse and fine cut boring or drilling is great. I have drawings if you want them fir inspiratuon and there are pictures on one of my albums on here.

Hi thanks to all for informative reply's. In answer to not done it yes the object of the exercise is to purely to overcome the weight of the head on manual lift operation.. I have come across a short video on U Tube showing the installation of a gas strut on a rack operated head system. Would a gas strut work on a leadscrew & nut system. ? I just want to keep things a simple as possible as not into electronics.

I just entered ‘gas’ in the forum search and a previous thread on gas struts appeared along with links to earlier threads.

My query to you was to try to determine what you were looking for. Anything that reduces the effective weight will reduce the lifting effort. Racks with pinions just seem to be a more coarse (less refined?) alternative to a feed screw.
