I have a Model 180-6 with a Type 302 refractory tip that measures the temperature of a surface up to 650 deg centigrade by physical contact of the tip with the surface. I wondered, in this day and age of digital readout infrared pyrometers that measure the surface temperature remotely by simply pointing at the surface, if these old pyrometers are thought to have any advantages and indeed any monetary value? Curious, because the modern infrared type are so cheap (sub-£50) and this old one looks like it was an expensive piece of kit maybe common in the industrial heydays of the 1960's. It seems to do the job fine on lathe work although frankly I hardly ever use it (although perhaps I should) – does anyone in model engineering use pyrometers?
