I have tried so Hard to build this Boiler it's not as easy as i thought it would be.

Started of Tig Welding the Boiler but so many thing to learn but was the wrong Boiler to learn on.

Bridges on Top of boiler fouling Cross stays Regulator but trying to seal boiler tubes in Firebox has been a nightmare.

I tried and had to cut Barrel of and restart again.

I tried a second time so close but still have leaks.

I thought using Silver Solder would be simpler but being color blind found getting right temperature impossible.

Would love to know if any one would take it on to finish but been told no one will take on once it's been started.

If any one knows who you can go to who might be able to take the Job on.

I know i will not get a ce if some one finishes it any advise please.

Would really like to use this Boiler as can't afford a new one.

if not who is the cheapest tig welded Boilers

I think you are probably better off biting the bullet and put this boiler down to experience.

I am contemplating the build of the boiler for my 5" 2-8-0. Boiler materials are going to be in excess of £600.00 as the boiler main barrel is 6" diameter 10 gauge. I know I could make it but it is the risk of an error that is far to easy to make has me concerned, so I may well go for a commercial boiler.

Ron – total respect for trying !! Tell me exactly where it leaks and send it to me, job done. Im not going to tig it, too many amps for my set but sure I can fix for you.

Makes my teeth grind to see so much effort and cash being unsuccessful

Maybe I should put a clockwork motor into my first loco, or 20 x AA batteries

You would not get a CE Mark anyway because you are not a "certified" maker anyway, someone else finishing it does not enter into it on this one.

As regards "cheap" tig boiler makers? None, they appear to charge higher prices than silver soldered ones.

Take up Fizzy's offer. I too am nearly there with a 5" for Speedy here in France. There is just one boiler fitting on the back head which has a tiny leak at 160psi, the problem being is that to re sweat it in, you need a lot of heat which in turn melts the s solder on the next fitting etc. Tried oxy acetylene, but it takes so much gas as the copper takes a LOT of heat. It took me 3 attempts to seal the firebox tubes. I am sure in my own mind that the old cadmium based silver solder flowed better than the modern stuff but others will convince me I am wrong I expect. Keep at it.

Yes i am going to i made my own forge with Air line going onto a tube with holes to make blower.

I then used charcoal as could not get any Coke.

I was able to get it really hot then with Oxy and Acetylene was able to silver solder but i don't know why it just does not flow for me.

It has to be something i am doing wrong just don't know what.

I have had the same problem as you when trying to seal the Boiler it opens others up and have to keep going back on them.

Just wish i had £3000 for a new boiler would solve all problems as rest of Loco is fine.

Good luck with yours i know how frustrating it is as been trying for a long time,

Has anyone tried plunging the rest of the boiler in a barrel of vermiculite to insulate it?

You can get big bags of the stuff at proper garden centers

Maybe you got it too hot and burnt out the flux using the OA, or maybe you melted the solder instead of letting the job melt the solder. I'm no pro, but I heat the job up and continually test with the solder (out of the flame) until it runs. The flux remains good this way and the solder wets. If it is not wetting then the flux is not doing its job.

As a matter of interest, did you follow the steps of assembly exactly as set out in Alec Farmer's book ?

Too late,Ron is where he is, certainly sounds like cooked out flux, all nasty black and resists any solder flow. Frames and wheels etc look very nice, pity about the boiler problems, including the design details that are missing.

Yes that is what happens with the flux nightmare.

Can't understand i have been a professional welder with Tig Mig Arc Gas and was coded years ago on Mig for pipe work.

The boiler has had cross stays and long stays done after the Photo was done.

I take the Boiler at each stage to be checked i had just center punched but had not drilled and fitted in last photo.
