Where to get a running bearing for Ajax AJ8 mill

Having now repaired the casting for my new (old) Ajax horizontal mill I am in need of a new running bearing/sleeve for the arbor. Being a small machine it seems to have an unusual OD (1″ I’D x 1.5″ OD x 2″ long). Any ideas where I could source one? EBay comes up with very little regardless of dimensions.

As the outside surface is ground i assume it will be prohibitively expensive to get one custom made.

The old one is completely shot, as was the bronze Bush. I’ve managed to source a suitable Bush (1.5″ I’D x 1-7/8″ OD)

Do you mean the sleeve on the far end of the arbor? You should be able to turn one up on a lathe and emery cloth it to a good enough finish for the kind of low-rpm duty it does. Not as fancy as the original ground surface but good enough for home hobby use.

It is a plain steel sleeve, like a spacer but with a ground surface. It runs in a bronze bushing that is pressed into the arbor support arm. Oil is drip fed.

I’ve just polished up the old one and it isn’t quite as bad as I first thought but would still replace it if I could find a new one.

Give Boneham & Turner a ring, they sell Euco arbor spacers and bearing sleeves. Can't find the Euco website. Used both companies in my working life and allways found them helpful. Assuming of course you are Uk based.

What about using needle roller bearing inner ring(s) ?

May need to use more than one is series, but I don't think that would cause problems.

As per hopper, but dimensions are not that important (apart from the arbor close slip fit, which will not rotate) – just minimun clearance and concentricity. Bore out your current bush to get good bearing surface and make the arbor sleeve to whatever tolerance is required.

Another possibility might be like we do with worn-out motorcycle fork tubes: get them hard chromed and reground. A small job like your bearing sleeve should not cost too much. Just make sure they know that concentricity with the ID is critical, possibly making them an arbor to mount the sleeve on for grinding.

Not sure if you will find many hardened roller bearing races etc in inch sizes these days. They seemed become a thing of the past some years ago. You might have to make a bronze bushing with metric ID to suit a metric bearing race to use that option.

1 1/2" Od x 1 1/4" Id x just over an inch long hardened & ground inner bearing ring.

Press or glue 2 onto a 1" bore x 1 1/4" Od sleeve & away you go.

Quite a range of Imperial bearing inner rings readily available – precision ground hardend parts at reasonable prices

Hi Mark

had the same problem with my aj8 mill the bronze bush was ok (clocked for concentricity )

it was oversize for the arbour bearing I machined a new one out of mild steel

the previous owner has put an oiling cup on the yoke so the bush and bearing get a good supply of oil
